Booking is a distant memory, and I can't remember exactly what fuel option we chose, but my best recollection is that this time, because we would be here for more than 3 weeks, we booked the much cheaper option of full to empty.
On arrival we were told we would pay for fuel then, and an attempt was made to do this on my UK credit card. I think she messed up for some reason and this payment didn't go through. This would explain why they charged the EUR 70 when we brought the car back.
To reflect on this, I used to get mad with the car rental people and complain about everything I found unjust. Like any business they have to make money and I have had some ridiculously cheap rentals out of season, so I expect, like all the other tourists, to get ripped off in the summer months and try not to let it destroy my karma.
But, having said that, the purpose of a comparison site such as DYS is to compare. I think they should accurately expose all the extra costs and add them to the total when they make a comparison with others. Like Ryanair avoid full exposure of extra charges in price comparison websites, many of the Spanish car rental companies do the same. It is for the comparison companies, in my opinion, to tease out each and every extra charge likely to be levied: with a flight this includes a standard cabin bag and with car rental this includes the fuel you use, the bond you have to give if you use your own insurance, and the seemingly random and arbitrary airport taxes and extra charges.
