It amazes me that any Brit books with Goldcar, given the UK consumer organisation's review of them:

Kind regards,

I think Goldcar are ok for people who pay for full insurance ( making mega bucks from them) Goldcar don’t chase people for ( fake) scratches then. It’s the clever customers who have annual CDW insurance so only pay the  “cheap” offer price who they rip off. and try and get extra money for “hidden scratches”

I do hope your credit card company will help you recover any lost funds.

I am amazed that Goldcar still have customers. Poor reviews and scare stories have been well publicised, and yet there are still queues at the desk every time I pass through Alicante airport. Puzzling.

The thing is a lotta folk rent through 3rd party sites like DYKS & are sent onto a hire company then. Some of these don’t give you the option to choose your hire company & some do. In this case it seems DYKS did & the gentleman knowing it was Goldcar decided to give them another chance. Leopard & spots springs to mind when thinking of Goldcar & a few more like them. All the big companies like Europcar who own Goldcar have companies like this where they milk the customer under another name.

Europcar probably want such bad service from goldcar so that people will come back to them

Hi Lee,

thanks for the warning. If you read Goldstar user reviews on google you'll see your not the only one that they tried this on with!.

If your a regular on this site you will have often seen complaints about Goldcar.  I vowed never to use them again a few years back and I never have.

A quick check on car rental websites shows Goldstar at Alicante airport rated as 4 stars out of 5 (AutoEurope) 7.2 out of 10 (Rentalcars.com),  7.8 out of 10 (Arguscarhire and SpainCar Rental) - maybe one reason why people still keep booking them!

Rgds,

Aitch.

Just a gentle word of caution and that is to avoid car rental companies at any airport particularly in Spain, whether you book directly or through a brokerage company (such as DOYouSpain (just for example),

The Rental agents earn a commission on every "Insurance or fuel" package they manage to sell you. (They will try and frighten you)

In addition, if at the end of the rental they inform you of damage that you know you didn't cause and refuse to refund your deposit, the Rental agent can earn on average an additional €50 to €100 per rental on each deposit withheld.

It is not uncommon for a Rental agent to earn more in commission each year than their annual salary.

My advice would be to hire from a local Company not based within the terminal, there are many reputable Companies just off the airport who will meet you off your flight (you´d have seen them with the name cards) and take you to your car which is normally only a few minutes away.

For disclosure purposes I took early retirement from an Engineering background and spent a number of years working as a training Manager in the I.T department of two separate Global car rental companies (both of which have offices in all major Airports including Alicante)

You can of course purchase annual "Collision Damage Waiver" Insurance from any number of suppliers before you travel and its very inexpensive, but the rental companies will tell you they don't recognise it and still charge you a massive deposit and once they have it they won't give it back without a fight.

Cheers

Gary

Just got to stop using the rip off  companies at the airport!! Plenty of others which are hassle free, Wheels in spain, magum, lara cars, coys rent a car, just to name a few

This is good advice
