Hello Roisin

The following link might provide information for you.   Internations.org is an interesting forum in general.

https://www.internations.org/go/moving-to-spain/working

Perhaps when you arrive in Spain to take up your job, the school may assist you in getting set up as regards employment formalities?  They should as an employer??🥺

Make sure you have your EIIC card from your health board.  It needs to have same name/names as on your passport.  Both passport and EIIC have to be presented at medical center should you need it.

Have you looked into taking out an annual travel insurance which covers whole year in Europe?   For instance if a student was going to study on Erasmus course for a year abroad there is an insurance for that.  Perhaps VHI may offer cover for language assistant?

Please don’t feel too worried about getting residency sorted until you hear what your employer may advise.

Wishing you every success.  Hope that you enjoy a great year in Alicante.  Please let us know how everything goes for you. 😎

Hi, thank you very much! I hadn't considered asking my school for help, so I'll do that once they email me back (I think school's been off for the summer!) :) I've got my EHIC already and have been getting quotes for insurance, but thanks for the advice. And thank you again!!

Hi Roisin,

NIE and Residencia are two different things.  The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is an identity number for foreigners.  It's needed for all sorts of things and, as you've said you will be working in Spain, you will definitely need one, as it's also your unique tax identifier (...

...whether you earn enough money to pay tax or not).

If you're not yet in Spain, you could try obtaining your NIE through the Spanish Consulate in London or Edinburgh.  When you go onto their website, you'll see that it says not to use their services if you intend to live in Spain or for seasonal work, but when you fill out the application, simply say that your reason for wanting an NIE is to open a bank account in Spain:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/faq/nie-application-uk-spanish-consulate-london-edinburgh/

You should apply for Residencia, as you intend to be here more than 90 days, but you need your NIE for your Residencia appointment, so obtaining your NIE should be your priority.

There's a backlog in processing residency applications at National Police stations and Foreigners' offices all along the Costas, in large part due to British immigrants trying to become legal before the UK leaves the EU, which is why it's so difficult to obtain an appointment online.  A gestor will charge around €70 to help, but there's no guarantee they will be able to secure an appointment either.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks for your response! Apologies that my original wording was unclear, I'd meant that I was just trying to get a residencia appointment as the (very helpful) guides on here had confirmed that the NIE would be assigned with it :) Unfortunately, any appointments available in the Edinburgh consulate are after I'm in Spain, but thanks for the info!! Good to know it's just dififcult in general to get an appointment lol, but I'll maybe look into contacting a gestor then. Price seems reasonable! Thanks again :)

Certainly, but be prepared to widen your area to e.g. Elche and Orihuela.

Having just got my residencia after 5 months of trying to make an appointment, I can tell you that the  new appointments or cancellations are posted about 11.45 a.m. so you need  to be on your phone around that time.

Download the app with gives you a Sede electronica or internet cita previa, it will allow you to do it in English and if it's on your phone it keeps the info for repeat attempts.Make sure you have absolutely everything you need paper wise otherwise they won't process you and will send you away, they did it to me and then I had to wait to make another appointment which was painful!

Congratulations on getting there.

I did look for an app some time ago, when I was preparing my residency guide, and found this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adiltech.cita

I didn't mention it, as the rating is abysmal, the reviews say it's loaded with adverts, and that all it does is to give you a link to the appointments web page.

If however you've found a better app, then I'm sure that quite a few people would be interested in a link to it.

After applying in January I eventually got it in June, and I speak fluent Spanish!

Very bureaucratic and unfriendly everywhere it seems but yes I eventually got it in Denia.

You do need a translator as they take no prisoners!!!

I have heard from my solicitor that they are not offering any residency until after Brexit is sorted. I have just moved and want to change

my address on my driving licence and was told to wait for Brexit.

It's not true that they are not offering appointments, each area is different, but there aren't many to be had! Just go on each day at about 11.45 and try.

The other thing to remember is each area asks for different things. My friend was asked for 1 year's bank accounts in Benidorm,  I was asked for 3 months in Denia for residency, not change of address
