Hi all,

We have taken private healthcare out with Salus here in Spain for over a year now (they were recommend to me) I had recently seen terrible reviews online! I am looking to switch provider because of this! Does anyone have good experience with Salus or does anyone recommend any other insurers? I have read recently that dkv, M fiatc, sanitas and aegon are very good? I was told there is no wait time again on the policy once you prove you've been already covered. Hoping  this is correct.

We both have just turned 60.

Thank you in advance.

We’ve had Salus for 3 years . They have been excellent ..but not always the same story doctors & health centres we can use.  Our local Quiron centre closed and moved leaving us with, usually, a 3 hour round trip to the newly built one as the buses aren’t frequent & often run late ..- we don’t have a car - sometimes by 30 minutes or more.  Or we have to fork out for taxis.

But Salus themselves have been great & paid all tests & consultations thus far.

Hello. I have used DKV for several years now. Yes, it goes up approx 20 euros per year however no co-payments and I have peace of mind. When I started my policy it was around 120 euros per month, and the service was spot on when needed. I now pay approximately 208 euros per month, next year (2024) say 228 euros per month. Yes, teeth/eyes are not covered however I have a private dentist etc so all is fine.  It's a premium cover however I believe in Spain most Eye and teeth problems are not covered by a fully comprehensive policy anyway. Paying into the Spanish Health System does not cover teeth or eyes either. DKV cannot be faltered. Yes you will read there are cheaper options for residency etc etc etc. Its people in general not having the proper cover when the time is needed. To reiterate it's not worth trying to cut corners. In the long term, it will cost you dearly in many respects. I hope my reply is helpful. Sincerely, Christine.

Thanks Christine, its true you get what you pay for! It is dearer than our Salus policy.

From personal experience I could not recommend DKV. We did not have the best service or support from them when needed. My wife and I changed to ASSSA last year. We have had a couple of medical issues since we took out our cover and the service has been excellent.

ASSSA premium stays the same (apart from small inflation increases) whereas we found the annual increases by DKV to be unacceptable, especially as we intend to keep up private health care even after we reach pension age.

I'm sure you will hear good and bad opinions for all private health care providers so just do your due diligence.

Thank you Rob60 for your reply. Dkv does seem to have a hefty annual increase alright. I have since seen M fiatc and Sanitas too have good reviews and less of an annual increase. I will take a look at Asssa too. Your probably right saying all will have some good and bad reviews however Salus seem to have more bad than good so I'm nervous about staying with them especially getting older. Do you recommend a bróker or did you do all the research?

I would suggest a meeting with a representative from ASSSA who can explain everything.

We spoke at great length to Jenny at the ASSSA office in Moraira, not that far from you. No pressure selling just a very detailed conversation on how it works and she will take as much time with you as you need.

I’ve been with DKV for six years. They have been excellent. Use IMed Hospital in Elche (one of the best in Spain). Had a right knee replacement last year. No waiting. Had a XRay then MRI the same day I saw my Doctor, then the following week had the operation. Fully recommended.
