A neighbour of mine, new to Spain, has been offered IPTV via MAG box. Says the company charge 300 for set up (wifi only) and that includes first year rental, subsequent years at 175. Is that considered expensive?

Most important is the quality of the signal you receive. The best box will give poor results if the signal is low or weak. I have very good results with a 300mB fibre line (Movistar 38,-/mo.)
