If you were asking if you can stay for 90 days in your holiday home here in Spain then book another holiday elsewhere in Europe through a travel agent, then it's a no, I'm afraid. Regarding this 90 days in six months, I was initially going to spend 3 months in Spain, then 3 months in UK, then 3 months in Spain, etc, but my home contents insurance gets very expensive if I am away for more than 61 days, so, can I spend 2 months in each country 3 times a year rather than 3 months two times a year?

It's 90 days per year I'm afraid. After 6 months in Spain in total in a year you automatically become a tax resident and need to pay taxes here.
Also look into Modelo 720.

That's wrong Steve.
It's 90 days total in any 180 day period for a stay.
To become tax resident then you need to be here for 183 days in a calendar year.
Modelo 720 only applies to residents.
