I agree entirely with your remarks, Many years ago I used to cycle myself and became quite accustomed to the leers and remarks of passing motorists.

However, my post concerned the difficulties faced by those of us who live in rural areas used heavily for practice routes by professional teams. Our lane is some 9 km in length, and we live in a tiny Cami turning off this, approx 5 km from either end. It is extremely narrow and very winding with ...

...steep drops on one side. There are, if one is careful, places where it is possible to pass cyclists. But not often. Today I drove home in second gear behind a team of professional cyclists, who were not even riding in the permitted two abreast, although even this makes life difficult here, but in a huge pack occupying nearly the full width of the lane. They must have been perfectly aware that I was behind them and there were places where they could easily have assumed single file. This is a regular occurrence, including the single professional cyclist riding in the exact middle of the lane, with the same result. Driving that far under these circumstances is not conducive to universal love and appreciation of the sport.

And, incidentally, whilst I perfectly understand the position of agricultural labourers who may not be able to afford a car, living in the middle of vineyards, almonds and olives, I have as yet not seen more than a couple of them using bicycles.

Hysterical that you think they should move over for you ..really? Why ..can't you wait ...desperate to get nowhere fast and burn some more fuel emissions? Hysterical car driver mentality..move over for me ...

I think that the basic road courtesy should extend to them not occupying the entire width of the road, thus preventing the many people who live in this area from accessing their own property in a reasonable timescale.

We who pay for the roads should crawl along for a long disance at as little as 16 kms per hour while lycra louts take up all the room, while belching out plenty of methane from their latest veggie meal, and heated air from the other end?

The point is when motorists go out, it is for necessary shopping and such, as all who live in rural areas with no public transport know. And we are often older people too so cannot walk long distances.

Meanwhile lycra louts should use tracks they pay for to go round and round them if they want exercise. No lout I have ever seen cares in the least about the nice countryside they may go through, or the towns. They want to go as fast as possible, at any risk to get from A to B. To beat previous times I suppose as some take suicidal chances to gain extra SECONDS.

Cycle Nazi, Jeremy Vine who likes taking videos of motorists was recently filmed himself going across a crossing with people on it, crossing the road. Increasingly motorists have dash cams to catch the crazy way cyclists behave. If you do not already have one, get one. They are cheap and many are just plug in to your cigarette lighter and put on your windscreen, and they are ready.

"As the video shows, your honour, the cyclist pulled out in front of me without warning, leaving me no chance to stop."

In Spain cycling is one of the sports that is encouraged, they have competition races all the time and the big ones are organised with the police, they shut roads because there are so many cyclists. There are some groups of cyclists that are very selfish and take up half the road which makes it very difficult for a vehicle to overtake. These are the ones that break the rules, and they go so fast, they wouldn't be able to stop. Although the cyclist's break the rules the police don't usually do anything. That's Spain.

Please explain to me how being in rural areas is not apparently likely to hold up traffic? We live out in the sticks and am unaware completely of this idyllic possibility.

Because there are little to no traffic lights, roundabouts, two lanes/more of traffic queuing up waiting to go. Some of the mountainous roads around here a cyclist will actually overtake a car be the roads are so tight that a car cannot drive more than 20 to 30km in certain areas. If a cyclist is in town where the population is much greater they hold up more people if they don't use the lanes provided for them

I lived in Hondon de los Frailes for a time and drove down the mountain to Albatera for shopping, etc.

Cycles often freewheeled down the mountain and if something went wrong, they had no hope of stopping before probably plunging off of the cliff.

In Benidorm, where the council hates cars, there are such low speed limits for cars, and cycles and ebikes can easily overtake them, being careful of the endless ramps everywhere.
