99% of motorists stop at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.....100% of cyclists don't  !!!

Steve

I agree with you totally!

They are so arrogant in general, travelling in groups and blocking traffic seems to be their favourite past-time and blocking side road entrances while they wait for one of their bunch who has been left behind. I have never even seen them on the cycle tracks.

Yes, there may be one (or two?) who actually follows the rules, but whether we are speaking about Spain or the UK their general attitude seems to be that they act as if they are alone on the roads.

While I was crossing a busy road in London, with 3 car lanes and a cycle track where all cars were waiting for the green light to move forward, a cyclist ran into me and I grabbed him to stop him. He said the red lights have nothing to do with cyclists 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱.

There was an ad in magazines & on tv with a guy who had to defuse a bomb by cutting a wire. You guessed it, either a red or a green one! The comment was that if you were a cyclist you would not know the difference 😂😂😂😂

On a similar theme....I understand that it mandatory for all bikes to have a bell on. If that is the case why are cyclists so reluctant to use them when approaching pedestrians especially on the canals. I have walked along the canals in the Villamartin area dozens of times with my wife and disabled father in law and there as NEVER been a time when a cyclist as approached from the rear ( really fast) with no warning. Surely it would be courteous just to ring the bell to let us know they are approaching.

I’m a cyclist and but unlike others I do stop at lights walk across crossing but not all drivers give us 1.5 meters when overtaking us so car drivers can think on

Unfortunately there is and always be a twat on the road who thinks they're right. In Spain shouting and the blaming the other person is considered normal....my neighbour (who is actually really lovely) cut me off and started beeping her horn and shouting, then she realised it was me, smiled said "sorry didn't realise it was you my fault" and went on her merry way 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

I'm not sure how it is in Spain but in the UK it's a common myth that Vehicle Exercise Duty (VED), commonly know as road tax, pays for the building and the upkeep of roads. The tax generated by VED goes into the general taxation pot along with other taxes raised by the chancellor of the exchequer...

Only £7.5bn of £30.7bn raised in 2012 was spent on roads - concern at big shortfall. And.....
This is the latest in a series of announcements which will see more than £24billion spent on England’s strategic road network between 2010 and 2021 – the biggest upgrade to our roads in over 30 years.”
Which works out at a paltry £2 billion a year:https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/89224/only-a-quarter-of-car-tax-is-spent-on-roadsI don't know about now but 20 years ago, NINETY PERCENT of UK road tax was spent on SCHOOLS. No wonder why the government try to hide where it goes nowadays.

For this to work, it needs cyclists to travel in single file. Even just a few abrest on narrow roads means that a car cannot legally overtake them.

I agree with Tebo53 on this subject as does my driving instructor.  As for overtaking with the clear distance is most motorist intention, but we are severely restricted by the solid white line in the middle of the road, as cyclists should be on the white line next to the cycle lane or hard shoulder.  It is illegal to cross it and hefty fines apply if caught.  Again that depends on the civil guardia who catches you.  No-one intentionally means other road users or pedestrians harm, but rules need to be adhered to to make it safe.  In some instances it causes problems because no country except the netherlands have thought it through properly.  I know of an brit expat that failed their driving test because they could not overtake a cyclist without crossing the white line, the examiner failed them for taking too long to make a decision  and for holding up other riad users.

Hi,

it's not a road tax, it's a tax for owning a vehicle. According to the article I posted above road tax was abolished in 1937. I personally cannot remember any government, this one included, try to claim they use the vehicle excise duty solely for roads.

Aitch.

Most of the above comments are about open roads.

Today in Alicante, I saw a group of cyclists (in their fifties, not teenagers) cycle down hundreds of steps past carers walking senior citizens, and dog-walkers with long leads, down to Av Marva, above Luceros.

The authorities have not figured out priorities or lane colours at junctions where tramlines, dual carriageways, pavements and pedestrian crossings criss-cross each other.

In San Juan Playa, near the 09 bus terminal, pedestrians can see a mixture of red and green lights, as they have to zig-zag around hurdles near the traffic-light ''controlled'' pedestrian crossing.
