Prescription drug charges

I have been pondering moving to the Benidorm area for a while and one of the questions I need answered is; how much are my prescription free drugs over here going to cost me over there, and how do I find out. I’m not having a lot of luck contacting a pharmacy, and my Spanish leaves a lot to be desired. Flying out would be inconvenient and expensive just for that purpose, so I’m hoping that someone there will assist me in getting the answers I need.

Regards,

Steve.

If you can get an S1 then your medications should only cost you 10% of retail price and then limited to something like €8 or 9 per month.

If your had private health cover ir can cet onto Convenio Especial then you will pay the full retail price for everything and that can get very expensive.

If my wife and I had to pay full price there would be months where we'd be spending €500 or even more!

Obviously depends on what you take, if you are moving permanently, if you are getting the state pension and so on.

Some things are much cheaper here but others more expensive. For example, Omeprozol only costs €2.43 for a months worth but things like paracetamol, ibuprofen etc are more expensive. Cough medicines also more expensive.

As mentioned,

How old are you, if pensionable age then it will make a massive difference to costs.

Also to live here permanently you will need a certain level of healthcare which could make a difference to costs.

If your meds are non prescription perhaps if you let us know what they are you might get definitive answers from members who take the same...

Hello Darro,

Thank you for your helpful answer.

After I had asked this question, my niece informed me that she & family were going to Benidorm on the 20th, and told me of this S1.  She said she would try to find out more about it, but I think I can investigate it from here.

Thanks,

Steve.

Hello Tebo53,

Thank you for your reply.

I am pleased to say that I have not needed to worry about getting up to earn a living for a number of years, so I can apply using the S1 form.  Hopefully I would be accepted.

I believe all my meds are prescription except the Aspirin.

The healthcare insurance could be a blocker and will need to be checked out.  I think I tried it before and didn’t like the answer.  I have no intention of sitting in a chair for the rest of my life, and that tends to push the price up.

Thanks,

Steve.

Hi Soapy,

If you pre-register your S1 with the Spanish INSS office before you apply for your NLV you can use the S1 healthcare cover as part of your NLV application instead of private healthcare.
