Hi from an other Irish person.
We, my wife and I and our little dog spend from October to late March each year in Spain, touring in a Motorhome but missed the last year due to Covid. We travel all over Spain and like each area for different reasons. As my username suggests we do spend extended time in and around the Benidorm area, usually December - February as we fly home to visit family at Christmas.
As Ray suggests, it is an area that is frequented by a certain clientele of tourist that is not to everyone’s liking…. but, that tourism scene is mostly tied down to quite specific areas that most of us has no interest in…… and once you look past that fact you’ll find Benidorm quite a lovely place to spend time. Stay away from the ‘strip’ … in over twenty years being there we walked it maybe twice and that was quite enough.
The vibrant gay scene is in the old town, not loud nor obnoxious, it is respectful and appreciates the culture that is found there.
The old town in particular is quite lovely, beautiful restaurants and with a Spanish backdrop it is a nice place to spend time.
We like areas outside the resort itself, Albir,Altea,Calpe, all served by a very good bus service (#10 route) and the hillside behind taking in the local towns of La-Nucia etc. is well worth a visit.
Sitges is different, definitely a more relaxed place but in the same breath it doesn’t offer the same experiences found further south and we prefer Peniscola and areas around there, but each to their own.
Either area would be lovely to spend time, but look past the ‘bargain loving brits’ image that is portrayed on the TV and you’ll find a very different Benidorm, one you’re likely to fall in love with and one that is as diverse as any modern world city.
Enjoy your trip and I’m sure wherever you decide to go you’ll find Spain a lovely place to be.
