Hey Folks,

Am new to the Forum and also the Costa Blanca. As the title suggests, would like some info from other members on their recommendations for both home and car insurance. We had one company recommended to us and upon further research it seems that out of 201 reviews that 97% were negative so would greatly appreciate the members assistance ! We have just recently moved to the Polop area and are loving it although it has been non stop with the various running around sorting things out with the various hunts for a car, washer and dryer, furniture , etc. TIA and looking forward to joining a group or 2 when things slow down and the wife and I actually have some time to relax and see some sights and meet some people!

Recommend you contact Grand Alicant Insurance, advertise on this site. Contact Alfonso there, very helpful and professional guy, his English is excellent.

Living now for 58 years permanently in this country, one of the first thinges I had to learn was forgetting about seriousness, trustworthuness, reliability, punctuality, responsability etc. On the contrary, I had to develop an up to then unknown amount of mistrust against everyone and everything. In the US my feelings were to receive more than I expected, in  Spain getting a lot promised and nothing at the end. Do not sign anything you do not fully understand, specially the General Conditions, a booklet of some hundred pages.. Good luck.

Liberty are one of th major companies with whom most of the better agents deal.

We have them for house and vehicle insurance, as did my mother. They dealt efficiently with a major leak in her property whilst she was hospitalised. We ourselves have had minor domestic claims dealt with very well, and yesterday I wrote off the front wheel and tyre on my small car. We live in the campo down a lane liberally garlanded with large stones and small rocks! Within an hour after ringing them, the grúa was there ready to transport me and car. In the end, the driver changed the wheel for the spare thus enabling me to get to tyre specialist some 15 km away. Efficient and friendly and very kind drivers.

Car insurance I've used Linea Directa and Liberty. I've found both easy to deal with and efficient, both at the admin side and dealing with breakdown. Happy to recommend both.

House insurance I've used Sabadell and would not recommend them at all. The banking side I still use, but my experience with with the insurance side was abysmal.

Have used Linea Directa, expensive but not tested.

I have used Mapfre for the house for a couple of years and will renew this year.

If you want an English speaking service you will pay a premium for it. If you can deal with everything in Spanish you will save money.

Hello Canadian Expat,

First of all, wellcome to Spain!

One thing to consider when taking out home insurance is the Public Liability coverage, this is very important as some companies will "lower" this coverage to give you a better premium. I would always suggest a minimum of 600.000€ even if you are in an appt or a house.

I would recommend you get an insurance agent or broker that you trust and stay away from banks when taking out home insurance, as they are more expensive with less coverage and they won't help you in case of a claim. The agent or broker will help you deal with claims managment and even negotiate the renewals with the company.

One more thing to consider is that if you are back and forth with your home country, be aware that in some companies they have whats called an "ocuppational period" this means that if you leave your home for some time (the time depends on the company, some are months, other are weeks) you will not be covered in case of an accident if you are out of your home for that period of time.

Feel free to contact me if you need any advice, as I will be happy to help. I would with an insurance agency through AXA (They don't have the ocuppational period).

I hope this helps!
