Hi everyone,

I’m planning to purchase a caravan home outside Benidorm next year on retirement. However I will need to return to the uk on a regular basis possibly every five weeks or so owing to family issues. I have an Irish passport and was wandering do I need to obtain any residency visa. I’ve read extensively on the NLV visa and 180 day rules without any clear ides what is required. TIa for any pointers.

Hi Eamon,

If you have an Irish passport and you intend on staying longer than 90 days here in Benidorm in one go then you have to register your presence with the National Police. You will need to sign on the foreigners register at the National Police station and prove you have the income and healthcare requirements.

Here is a link to all the information you need:

If you have an Irish passport you do not need a visa nor even a non lucrative visa. They are just for non EU passport holders.

You need to register your stay with a foreigners' office or national police station by going on the register of foreign EU citizens registered in Spain. As you will be spending over 90 days in one visit in Spain then that is all you need but click the "de no residente" on the application form. All you need to show is that you have medical insurance (either private or state if over retirement age and receiving a pension) and sufficient funds of 1 x IPREM (currently 600 euro per month) to maintain yourself during your stay without recourse to Spanish social security.

If, however, you will be spending more than 183 days (over 6 months|) in Spain in any one calendar year then you need to complete the same application form but tick the de residente part of the form. That will make you a full, tax paying resident in Spain and you will pay income tax on your world wide income to the Spanish tax office.

The application can be completed in Spain and should be done within 3 months of arrival in Spain.

The full procedure and access to the EX18 (application to go on the register) and the model 790 code 012 (fee for completing the application) can be found here
