H we have moved from the UK permanently to live in Bigastro we have received our S1 forms to get health care here. Went down to make an appointment to get the Sip card but they speak no English and we don't speak Spanish. We are looking for someone to accompany us on Tuesday,15th December @ 11.45 to do the translating for us. Has anyone got any recommendations for interpreter's in Bigastro?

Hi there,

You may already know this but you have to register with your local INSS (think DHSS) Office before registration at the Centro Salud (Health Centre). If you miss this step out the Health Centre won't issue a SIP.

You will need a prior appointment (cita previa) at the INSS. As a generalisation, staff at INSS don't speak English although you could get lucky. I asked my Gestor to do the appointment for me, cost €40, and collected the paperwork from her office.

I then took it to the Centro Salud and presented it. At that time my Spanish was basic at best but the receptionist looked at the paperwork and understood clearly why I was there. Normally they will issue a temporary SIP and you return a month or so later to collect your permanent one.

So, the services of your Gestor could end up being cheaper than a translator. Maybe.

Kind regards, Steve

That's excellent. Maybe my Spanish was better than I thought when I did it, they didn't insist on an interpreter. A bit harsh in my view because it's a very very simple process and really should not require an interpreter because there are no medical matters discussed. It's simply a case of verifying your identity, checking the papers and issuing the temp SIP. From presentation of the paperwork to exiting the Health Centre was 5 minutes.

Well why not try that first? Assuming you weren't turned away at the actual desk when they told you this?

Please don't think this is patronising,  it's not meant to be...

Smile a welcome, it's important to break that ice here..

Say Buen dia, lo siento por mi Espanol

Necesita tarjetas de SIP por favor

See what happens. If you're turned away nothing lost?
