My wife and I are looking to retire to the Costa Blanca before the 29th March 2019, we will be applying for residency, my questions are:
- can we apply for an NIE number before we actually have an address to move to? and
- are there any benefits in having residential status? Thanks in advance
There is a problem at the moment in that appointments for getting NIE numbers here in Spain are weeks ahead. I am told that, in Orihuela Costa, they are making appointments now for June. Elche police office it is the middle of April.
The best advice seems to be to go to the Spanish Consulate in UK and you'll get your NIE number much quicker.

Just thought I would mention when we came over for three days to sort lots of things including our NIE we found many of the offices didn’t have space or you had to come back in person a week or so later. We found one office in Alcoi about 80 mins inland from Benidorm who did it there and then and had appointments the next day. I’m guessing as it was a bit further away from the expat areas it helped?
If we had known we would have got our NIE over here as it would have been easier and cheaper too, but if you don’t have that option check out Alcoi we would recommend

Yes it’s much cheaper and easier especially as I also work in London but I never knew about this option before

Applied for mine in Edinburgh on the 9th Feb and I have just received it today
