Building costs for authentic stone house

Hello there,

I hoped someone might be able to share some wisdom please. Can anyone advice on costs per square metre for building in authentic stone in comparison to building blocks? My husband and I are looking at some land and the potential to build a house and I would like to try to understand the costs involved before we even consider it. We're in the UK still so we have no reliable and credible building contacts in the area yet.

Hi,

Normally builders/ surveyors work on M2 of the floor area to be built and then add on subtract whatever spec you have asked for?

Blocks are very cheap out here compared to UK and to actually buy they will only be around 4euros a M2 for house walls (20cm) .( plus labour etc)

To save costs the Spainish then clad these walls with stone for the effect if required.

Traditional stone walling say 50-60 cm thick will be considerably more expensive to buy and to build and I would guess labour and materials could cost from €100 upto €250 M2 depending on type of stone and weather you want a dressed finish or rough etc. Also these walls take four times longer to construct!

Going back to build costs I would guesstimate you will need to budget around €80-€150 per M2 finished again depending on where it is, plot, materials and spec etc etc! If you wanted to build in solid stone then you can see it could end up at least double the price of a block/ concrete house!

Just as a comparison UK prices are about £1000/1200 per M2 !! Build costs!
