Hi, I wonder whether anyone has advice on driving routes from Bilbao to Campoamor? I’m returning home to my property mid October. Recommended routes are either via Zaragoza or Madrid. Both are virtually the same distance and time. I’ll be departing Bilbao at midday planning on arriving during the evening with minimal stops for rest on the way. I’m hoping to make it without refuelling or late in the journey.

Although I’m unlikely to have any social contact, I believe Zaragoza may be a COVID hotspot. Guessing Madrid isn’t much better though.

Any recommendations please?

Either route won’t do you any harm. The virus won’t jump onto the car. Both cites are bypassed so just drive straight through and don’t stop for fuel in these regions. As you’ll say you’ll only need one fuel stop along the route or 2 if you decide to fill up coming off the boat. You can use your card at the automated pumps. Do stop & rest a couple of time’s & have a coffee. You’ll be as safe there as you’ll be in Campoamor. If you already know this route you’ll know it’s fairly boring and sleep is a killer. Take that rest in a busy well lit spot though.

The alternative route via Burgos-Madrid is easier driving and no tolls except Bilbao-Vitoria. When sourrounding Madrid (M50) disregard R3 (toll road - no shortcut)  and follow A3 directions instead. I used this route for many years.

We just returned from Scotland via Bilbao late last week, down to Costa Blanca and used the Non Toll roads around the outskirts of Madrid and had no issues, You could get to Ucles rest stop on the A3 in around 5 1/2 hrs from Bilbao about 552Kms

copy and paste into Google Maps and you should be fine, cheapest fuel onthe way down all staff are fully masked and no issues as you may find Spain is taking the pandemic more seriously than the UK, Good luck

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thanks for you reply. I’ve a TAG fitted for the tolls so that’s good to hear. Thanks

Thanks Ian for the advice, particularly on where to stop. I’ll search on the sat Mac for it and make sure I stop for a break there.

The UK’s attitude to the virus is one of the reasons I’m moving back, that and transition. Love the UK but do despair at times. Stay safe.

thanks aga
