hi all, a spanish builder has told me that i cannot put an extractor fan in the shower area of our bathroom, he said we can put it in the bathroom,  ( where he has put it ) but not in the shower area because no electrical unit can be placed directly in the shower area. this does not make sense to me, I said, t's still going to extract the moisture no matter where it is in the bathroom right, ? also what about the extractor fan in the kitchen over the hob? that's electric, it's in direct contact with with sometimes 4 rings on the go taking a lot of heat and steam, in the uk it's not a problem, but When in Rome right, if he's right fine, i just want to make sure he's not just saying this because he does'nt want to move it, thanks

I fitted  extractors in both bathrooms but i kept them to abt  2.5 m from shower tray. Shower head away from ex. so no chance of water getting into electrics

Its your property so do what you want

Hi

In the UK, these fans are called SELV fans (Safe Extra Low Voltage). They run at around 12 volts. A 240>12 transformer is fitted outside of the bathroom, so a 12 volt supply can be run to a fan right above the shower if needed.

Amazon.es has them. Just type in "extractor de baño de baja tensión"

thanks,it's a new build and the builder says,

By construction regulations, no electrical unit should be placed in the shower area. That is the reason why they have been placed on top of the WC. If you want we can change them but I do not guarantee that the city council will admit it. If we change it where you want and the city council does not admit it then you will have to take care of the cost of the change.

does what you say still apply.

I'm afraid I can't comment on Spanish standards.

In the UK, if you use a 240 volt fan (in the ceiling, or at high level in a wall or window), it must be 600mm from the shower, and from the wash basin taps. If the shower is fitted over a bath, you draw an imaginary line from the outer edge of the bath up to the ceiling, and the fan must be 600mm outside of that line. The purpose of this is to make it very difficult/impossible to touch the fan while you are wet. That doesn't sound too different from what your builder is saying. I have seen 240 volt fans above WCs in the UK, where space is at a premium.

SELV fans solve this problem, but they cost more than standard 240 volt fans, and take more time/effort to fit. It might be that your builder is trying to avoid the extra cost.

Perhaps you can suggest the SELV fan option before you give up on the issue. Amazon.es sell them, so they may be legal here, provided that they carry the "CE" marker.

Builders are not the best source of accurate information  concerning  Electrical Regulations.

In this instance ,I would check with a more reliable source on Spanish wiring Regulations.

On the mentioned point regarding Regulations in the UK referencing the use of Electrical equipment,( including extractor fans ), sited above baths and within Shower areas,

230 volt mains powered units are indeed allowed , providing they are not sited within zone 0 , which is the area below the upper rim of the bath or the shower tray , they should be of minimum IP44 water and dust protection and the circuit supplying them be protected by a 30ma Residual Current Device.

Hope that helps.
