Hello all

Can anyone offer any advice please as to whether it's possible to avoid or reduce the bank fee when I pay in a banker's draft cheque (having sold my home)?

My bank is Santander, and they have just advised me it's nearly 1,000Euro to pay in my cheque!

Thanks

Darro

Are you talking about a UK bankers draft?

If so, and you still have a UK bank A/C, pay it into that and transfer it from there.

You'll still pay something but not €1000!

Hi Darro

Thanks for the response, but No - it's a Spanish banker's draft. I didn't make that clear.

thanks

Hi Cat

Assuming your money is currently held in your solicitors account, surely they could transfer it electronically? If Santander would still charge you, then consider opening a fee-free account with another bank!

Cheers

Yes - I'd be telling them I want it paid by bank transfer.

Bankers drafts are a thing of yesteryear and should largely be consigned to the dustbin as all they do is enrich the intermediaries at the expense of the recipient.

Hi Steve

Thanks for responding; an electronic transfer would have been lovely and certainly what I had expected but unfortunately it's already been handed over as a bankers draft which does seem still to be the standard in Spain.

However, happily I have a way through using Currencies Direct, which can clear it and then transfer the funds.
