great informative answers guys and gals many thanks to all.

unfortunately my wife is not receiving any benefits but we will keep trying - she was turned down for DLA last year even though she cant walk 20 yrds most days, thankfully her employer changed all the contracts to work from home, otherwise I doubt she would still have a job.

Im currently in the ESA support group but get no other benefits.

Just to be clear we live in the UK currently, not Espania

Thanks Marcliff and John for updating me regarding the S1.

However, I have lived in Benidorm for 9 years and have not been required to pay any percentage for any prescribed medicines for at least the last 3 years. My income is above 18,000.

In December 2019, so around 3 years ago or so, the Valencian government changed the co-payments made by pensioners to stagger it and make it more equitable. Only a few regions give free prescriptions to the lower paid.

My wife gets hers free whereas I have to pay 10% of the cost but capped at a maximum of about 8.50 a month.

Would you consider spending 6 months at home and 6 months in Spain? With an Irish passport this could be an option. You’d still be residents of the U.K. so you’d arrange to bring your medication with you or bring prescriptions and pay for them when needed. it would be a good way to find your feet in Spain. After a few years, you could apply for residency if that’s what you decide .

We live in (NI) and spend about 6 months every year in our Spanish home. It’s perfect for us. In truth, it’s extremely hot during late June, July and August so it’s better to be at home where the weather is summery without being unbearable. Don’t jump into doing anything until you know it’s the right thing to do. If you sell up at home and decide to return a few years later, you’ll be unlikely to be able to afford to buy a similar house. Property in the U.K. rise and rise in price, not so over in Spain, sadly.

A EU/EEA passport holder including Irish passport holders, can only spend 90 days at anyone time in Spain. If you stay longer than 90 days you must be added to the Central Register of Foreign Nationals and obtain a residence certificate at a Foreigners’ Office or local police station. When registering you will have to provide proof that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay and provide proof of private medical insurance covering a minimum period of 12 months. This is EU law.

Boring. Not what the OP is asking. We know you know the rules and we know that you know that we know that you know the rules, so give it a rest and please try to be helpful and/or constructive.

Being the holder of an Irish Passport will not determine if you are entitled to State healthcare in Spain. As the previous poster has stated if you are in receipt of UK state pension this will entitle you to apply for form S1 in the UK which you then register with the Spanish health authorities o...

...nce resident in Spain.

As for prescriptions, anyone with an income greater than 18,000€ a year will have to pay half the cost of the medication. Those below this amount will pay up to 40%.

Pensioners with an income of less than 18,000€ who have made a tax declaration will pay 10% for a Spanish prescription with a maximum payment of 8 euros a month. Pensioners with an income greater than 18.000€ will pay a maximum of 18€ a month.

Not entirely correct.   My pension income is less than 18,000 euros per year and I do not pay anything for prescription medication.   Having said that I live in the province of Alicante which is about the only province where those with such earnings do not pay for prescription medication.

If it is so boring why bother reading it? The Forum member is giving out incorrect information, which needed corrected!

If your wife is receiving certain benefits from the UK government she might be entitled to the S1 healthcare cover which would also cover you as a dependent.

It would be wise to ring the overseas healthcare team at Newcastle to ask them.

If you get the S1 forms you will need to firstly pre-register those with the Spanish INSS office before you can use them as part of your visa application.

In the Alicante region pensioners do not pay for prescription medicines.

Steve

Hi, Can I ask, where is the INSS office applicable to Almoradi? I have printed off my S1 but I need to register it.  Thank you.

I belive this is the nearest INSS office to you:

 https://g.co/kgs/kG77ohT

However, you can register your S1 online. This link will take you to a guide from Age in Spain and it includes step by step instructions on registering your S1 online:
