Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread. We are considering buying a holiday home near Mojácar which will eventually be where we retire. As non-EU citizens currently living and working in the EU, it seems inevitable that our goods from storage in the US will be subject to import duty regardless of whether bring it over now without the Padrón or wait until we sort out a non-lucrative residence visa in the future. I’ve moved internationally 5 times already, but never really had to worry about “valuing” my household items. I was looking for that little nugget… as low as reasonably possible without sending up red flags. Also the information that there were no checks crossing the EU borders is helpful for what little we want to move immediately.

Has anyone imported a car? I would like information about a service provider to handle the inspection and registration. I’ve found the information on what specific modifications my vehicle will require. Bringing over my beloved Jeep will be lots cheaper than buying one in Europe.

I used this company for transferring to Spanish plates. They can advise you of the procedures and costs. The prices shot up massively after the UK voted to leave the EU. My Merc SL before the vote was around 1200€ after the vote it was nearer 5000€. I ended up not bringing the car. If you transfer within a short period you can save some of the import duties. I left my SL too long as it was in storage in the UK.

Hi all,

My partner and I have purchased a property and need to move our personal goods to it. All the advice I can find relates to people moving to Spain having gained residency, which we haven’t.

So my question is what are the importation rules for moving personal goods, furniture and so on to a holiday home? And what paperwork will need to have?

We’re hoping to take ownership in the 4 weeks. 😁

Good Transport companies, can help with this, we moved some of our possessions to the Mar Menor area, we how have NLV, but not at the time.
