Because Boris Johnson rushed through brexit and told everyone deals were done!!, he was praised or getting "IT Done"  in fact there is so many outstanding issues, trade deals gone sour border controls, immigration control, northern Ireland, trade labour agreements, driving licences, etc etc,...

... the only thing he agreed was to pay billions for 10 years in a divorce settlement.  It is the general public and countries that used to be uk allies that are suffering from a deal gone bad.  Take a look at the spanish in the uk, no licence exchange needed or test. The british government had 5 years to sort it all out, they did nothing and hid the true facts from the british people.  Didn't help with the british government opposition being led by a communist and zealot with a fruit cake brother.  Do you want me to continue?  Could write pages on the subject?  Just look at the rate if inflation and numbers of european workers umemployed now due to british arrogance and ignorance.  There is good and bad in everything, but brexit was going to happen, but got lost in translation as the british people did not vote for this, it was to stop the unprecedented immigration that was a problem and now is even worse. We cannot afford to support our nurses, emergency services, police etc who are expected to live below the poverty line whilst illegal immigrants live a reasonable life with money in their pockets at the expense of the british tax payer and contributors.  Comes to something when ukrainians are given preferential mortgages and fast track visas when ordinary british home owners are losing their homes everyday. Blah blah blah

Douglas,

bearing in mind we are talking about driving licence exchange in Spain - the key part of your your rant for me is the sentence "Take a look at the Spanish in the uk, no licence exchange needed or test" - why could the Spanish government not just reciprocate? It's not just the Spanish who have that right i the UK, it is every EU country.

The UK have agreed driving licence exchange with every other EU country, why is Spain taking so long. I don't think it's the UK government dragging their heels but Spanish truculence, most linked to the situation in Gibraltar, in my opinion.

I was asked "why the british government" i gave my opinion which we are all entitled to!!  IT CANNOT BE CLASSED AS A RANT it was stating the facts. The point is we were told all was done when Boris did the deal?  It was a lie, also if it takes more than a year to sort a simple matter as driving licences the rest of the outstanding issues will take forever.  I cannot speak for the Spanish Government, if you want an answer to your question ask them yourself.  Also check your facts about the "rest of Europe" there are many constraints in place that the british does not impose on our fellow europeans.  Anyway I no longer care as I have taken the 3 tests and passed my test and earned my licence.  I have earned the right to keep my British licence.

Well it read like a rant to me Douglas and having reread to check it looks even more like a rant. Anyhow I'm glad you've got your Spanish licence, drive safely.

Hello aitchc,

Not exactly every EU country am afraid, Italy has the same situation as Spain, agreement to exchange without a test was sealed shortly before Spain but in practice nothing has happened so far, until converted into law the agreement is not worth anything.

As far as I know Rumenia also does not exchange UK licences without a test but I stand to be corrected on this last one, not that there is a great UK expats community in that country anyway but it's still EU.

Personally as it's not a crucial requirement for us to drive we are sitting back and waiting, in the meantime ebikes are proving a treat weather permitting, we discovered so many new places at a fraction of the cost.

:-)

Hi Claudio,

re Italy, yes they are in the same situation as Spain in that they have an exchange agreement but it needs to be passed into law, but Italy have extended the period of accepting UK licences until end of 2023. Pity Spain did not do the same.

Re Romania - ss far as I can tell Romania allows UK citizens to exchange their driving licence without taking a test, according to the UK Gov website. Though, oddly, apparently those living in the Isle of Man do need to take a test.

If Boris or his father or any MP needed a licence then can I suggest this would have resolved within days.

I've read elsewhere that there may be movement on this, by end of week.

Fingers crossed.
