I don't live in Torrevieja by the way …!!!

It doesn't really matter when discussing these things, but why do you list your location as Torrevieja if you don't live there?

We looked at both places.  Not keen on the big city feel of Denia. Javea has more british expats.  There 3 different areas.... old town, port and Arenal beach and town.  Lovely rocky shore between Arenal and the port.  Denia bigger shops 15 minute drive over the mountain.  Javea busy with tourists July and August but beautiful weather and lots of restaurants etc. open throughout winter.  Warmer than the other side of the mountain in Denia.  Moraira half an hour away plus Jalon Valley.  All three areas have U3A groups.....look in their website as loads of activities, talks, trips.  Javea has sailing clubs and the Javea Players dramatic society....puts on plays plus has social events, too.  Costs depend on where you live.  Better to rent for a while and decide where you want to be.  A lot of retirees now selling their villas and moving into one of the three main areas....can walk instead of having to drive every day.  A terrace or garden with winter sun is good. ( Lots of places with central heating...radiators is preferable to reverse cycle aircon.  Oil heaters are cheaper than electric but produce condensation). A shady side for summer is also necessary.  All have aircon but electricity is expensive.  So.. have a good look round first.  Inland is Jesus Pobre, Gata de Gorgos, Teulada and Benitachell....nearer the coast than Jalon Valley and Alcalali but many expats out there, too, with a Jalon Valley U3A.  Good luck.

Thank you so much this is the most helpful response I have received. We have been to Javea and like it, might be limited with our low budget (max 110,000 plus costs) and need to look further inland,

We are visiting in October and hope tôtry and establish an area, we are reluctant to rent as we have two cats and two dogs the result of our rural life here in Brittany!

Thanks again.

Agree....with your budget it will have to be further up the coast from Denia or inland.  Couple who were on A Place in the Sun bought in Benimeli where they found a garden.  Most properties in the villages only have a courtyard or roof terrace.  If you are retiring, good to be near a U3A. Jose at Benitachell Properties is very, very helpful.  Register with some of the local agents.  Look at a map and find the Immobilarias.  There are many, many winter lets so you could do that till you explore what is available.  Happy hunting.
