Hi there

I am new to this forum and so am eager for any useful advice and information!

My husband and I would like to invest in a property in denia primarily for the winter months. We have not visited denia yet, however have researched other areas in Spain and feel on paper at least, denia best meets our needs. I have been searching some property and been told that not all areas in denia are equally blessed for winter sun. One agent suggested that el montgo only has sun until 2pm during the day in winter months and areas such as les rotas or la marina or st Lucia would better serve us for winter sun. Not been familiar with the area ourselves I thought it would be beneficial to put it out to an unbiased community and see what the general consensus is. Obviously we will not be buying anything without having visited denia a few times and stayed in a couple of different neighbourhoods, however these trips will be time limited and would never replace local knowledge. Please feel free to pass on all thoughts and experience. Both gratefully accepted!

Hi,

We had the same idea a few years ago, Denia is a lovely city and the surrounding area green and pleasant.

The advice we were given and witnessed first hand is the Denia is green for a reason. It is wetter and colder in the winter months than some other area's, even so its much warmer than the UK.

Dry, warmth and sunshine turned out to be our priority and we eventually bought in Pinar de Campoverde near to the Ma Menor. it is not as green as Denia.  However last winter was the wettest we have experienced in most area's of Spain.

So any decision is down to you personal preference and what is the most important to you. Take your time and travel around Spain at different times of the year to find what suits your lifestyle best.

Enjoy your search and best wishes for your future

Thank you Vivienne for replying. I'm not necessarily after very warm weather, just warmer and brighter than ireland in the winter. From my understanding, although I'm open to correction, the temp is somewhere around the mid teens in denia in the winter, also I'd be very happy to be close to a city with a bit of history and shopping, restaurants etc with a real Spanish feel.

Hi Castleman,

Thank you for your reply. I would prefer to live on mainland spain itself, although my husband and I do love Morocco and Tunisia we would  prefer to stick with mainland spain.

Have you any experience of Denia yourself?

Denia may suit you very well, the city is very lovely and Spanish and there are also some English speaking groups for you to join.  plenty of shopping and history. It is definitely warmer and brighter than the UK most of the time.

Hopefully someone who is a resident there will respond soon and give you more accurate information than I am able to, I have only visited and not lived there.

Best wishes

I forgot, we looked at houses and the surrounding area with Home Espana who were extremely helpful and informative.

Ah Vivienne,

Thanks so much, I've been looking at their site along with idealista and kyreo. I was looking for an estate agent local to denia itself as I think it's always better to have someone with a local knowledge but I'm struggling to find someone with good english who fits the bill! Aside from that  how do you find living on the costa blanca? Are you full time  or like ourselves only looking for a winter base?

There is a Home Espana office in Denia and the people working there live in the area and speak english and they have a wealth of local knowledge.

We live here full time and really enjoy the costa blanca there is something for everyone and found making new friends really easy.  For the first year every day was an adventure from learning how to live with a reduced electricity capacity, arranging repairs and work to be done with minimum Spanish language skills and generally learning how to work through the admin required for daily living.  TAX is a lot higher here than the UK so you have to be sure you are willing to take the hit. Private health insurance is very good and a lot cheaper than the UK but also needs to be budgeted for.

Enjoy the process of finding your ideal place and take your time , we spend time to looking at locations from Cadiz to Gandia before deciding where we really wanted to be.

There is a wealth of information on this forum from at Jim's guides to some very experienced member who are only to happy to answer questions.

Best wishes

Vivienne

We bought a villa in Las Rotas which enjoys winter sunshine! We are very close to the front so the walk into Denia is very enjoyable & I would agree with comments about the area being lovely.

Regarding an Estate Agent I spoke/met several and the best in my opinion is Manuela Baer. She is very open & attentive indeed. She can be contacted on [email protected]

Good luck!
