Hi all I have misplaced my NIE certificate and need a copy as my Spanish bank need to see it , but seem to fall on deaf ears or brick walls . I can’t understand why it’s so hard to get a copy .? Anyone have any experience or advice please !!!! I have an apartment in Formentera Del Segura for the last 12 years !
Why does the Spanish bank need to see your NIE? This is just a number which is printed on your TIE or green card if you are a resident. Simply show them that if they require your NIE number.
If, however, you are talking of your TIE card then the loss has to be reported to the police and then you reapply in the same way as you got the original but requesting for duplicate due to theft or loss.
On the other hand, if you are a non resident, you can apply for a duplicate NIE from the same national police station that issued the NIE in the first place. and fill in the forms again plus pay the tax (about 12 euro I think).
I agree, it makes no sense.
You must have had an NIE and when you opened your account and when you bought your apartment, not to mention for the utilities and taxes etc. so why any bank would want or need to see an NIE certificate now makes no sense at all, what purpose can it serve, have they said?
If you have no ties to the bank, mortgage or loans etc. I'd suggest switching to Wise or similar and flipping them the bird!
Which is why I don't think they are asking for an NIE certificate but the TIE instead. Always getting mixed up but the NIE is simply the ID number and the TIE is the actual resident card. Banks do ask for proof of identity in the way of a TIE or a passport but the NIE is not an ID document.
Possible confusion.

Thank you all for your help and support, as I am a non resident. Then it may be my tie certificate of which I don’t have but if I could see a pic of what they look like so I can look again ! And know what it is I’m looking for !
cheers 👍

As a non resident you won't have a TIE as they are the residents ID card.
Still can't see why a bank would need your NIE certificate as it's simply a number which is yours for life. But if you've lost it, you can get a duplicate from the national police station which issued the original and you will need a police certificate stating it has been lost.
Citizens Advice Spain has the procedure for replacing it https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/faq/how-do-i-replace-loststolen-illegible-residency-certificate-or-nie/

Hi Mullo55,
As you're non-resident, your Spanish bank may be asking you for your UK equivalent of the Spanish NIE, which is your National Insurance number. Spain's NIE is a unique, tax identifier and financial institutions in each country are obliged to share this information with their respective tax authorities.
Back in 2017, when there was a big push by the banking industry to achieve compliance with the legislation, I had to provide my NIE number to my UK bank, and my N.I. number to my Spanish bank.
Kind regards,
Kim

As a non resident it's a NIE, you would have gone to the Police Stayion either Orihuela or Alicante when you bought the apartment.
If you want to buy a car for example the garage will probably ask for your NIE number
Hope you are able to get a duplicate.

From reading the thread believe you are a non resident and therefore it’s your NIE in question, and others have advised how to get a copy of that ( have you not kept a note of it anywhere, or taken copies, as you need that number for almost any purchase in Spain? However, back to your Bank - I believe they could be referring to your passport as by law they need to take a certified copy of your passport each time it’s renewed, we recently took ours in to Sabadell as our passports were recently renewed - they told us we won’t need to do that again for 10 years - don’t ignore them as they could freeze your account

Marcliff I had to attend Caixa bank twice bi-annually and they required to see my NIE certificate. The last time they had wiped it off the system and I had to return two months later with the certificate to verify who I was even though they had my passport number, tax details and British Social security number. Incidently I could not have access to my account until they had seen the NIE certificate. After returning to the branch I was told that since I was retired I didn't, in fact, have to attend the bank bi-annually. It was a time consuming farce.
