Stupidly expensive. You can get one for 12 euro if you do it yourself. Loads of companies will charge no more than 60 euro but it is easy to do.

Absolute day light robbery. You can do it yourself and the only charge is the fee itself, which I think is under €10. As the previous poster mentions there are other companies who charge much much less.

Download the EX-15 form https://www.inclusion.gob.es/documents/410169/2156469/15-Formulario_NIE_y_certificados.pdf

Most fields are self explanatory. 1er apelido is your surname. 2 er apelido is your second surname if you have one.

Nombre is your first name (put both in here if you have a middle name)  Sexo H for male (hombre) M for female (mujer)

Fecha de nacimiento is date of birth as in 16/03/1980 and lugar is town and pais is country as in York - Reino Unido

Nacionalidad British

Estado Civil S - Single C Married V widowed D Divorced Sp Separated

Nombre de Padre Father's Name (if not known put S/N) Nombre de Madre Mother's Name

Then your address Name of Street/ Avenue or whatever. No House number Piso flat number if in an apartment

Localidad Town CP Postcode such as 03189 Provincia Alicante

Then your mobile phone and email

Finally the name of an agent if you have one.

Next page are the details of your agent.

4,1 Tipo de documento tick the NIE box and in the certificado tick either as a resident or non resident

4,2 Motivos (reason) Economic, Professional or Social (probably economic if buying a property or social if visiting)

4.3 Lugar de presentacion Where you are applying - Foreigners' Office, National Police station or consular office (if applying in UK)

4.4 Situacion en Espana, Estancia if your stays are up to 90 days and Residencia if taking up residency.

You then need to make an appointment at a foreigners office or national police station using this form https://icp.administracionelectronica.gob.es/icpco/volverPortada

Select the province Alicante then, on the next page, National Police procedures Assignment of NIE. This also gives you a link to the form 790 012 (in English but will print our in Spanish) to pay the tax at a bank which is about 12 euro or so but it will tell you how much once you've selected NIE,

And then wait for an appointment to become available which could take some time so keep trying at different times of the day.

If in UK you can apply at a Spanish consular office in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Don't pay 400 euro to do it for goodness sake.

Here is the EX15 form in English. Can't be used to apply, only as a reference if it can help anyone.

€400 is not an unheard of charge and some pay it without question!

Year’s ago prior to actually moving here, we paid 400 to an online firm to do this for us, being in UK at the time. It depends on circumstances, at the time we were perfectly prepared to pay this for the convenience of not having to take time out of our business to schlep up to the Spanish consulate in London, inclusive of the outrageous rail fares required, and further transport costs once in London, and the concomitant loss of income. It was a no brainer for us, as I could organise the entire affair from my own office desk, with the only personal inconvenience being a trip to our local market town for an appointment with a notary public. Apart from that it was all done online as I remember.
