Hi everyone,

I have to be honest, I find most Spanish cheese too mild for my palate, so I was interested to read an article from this week's "Eye On Spain" - although I realise that, by sharing, I'm increasing my competition to get hold of it, every time I visit Mercadona!  😄

https://www.eyeonspain.com/blogs/ianandspain/19559/if-you-havent-tried-this-cheese-you-must.aspx

If anyone has already tried it, please let me know what you think.

Kind regards,

Kim

Haven't tried it, but as a person who like a good strong cheese I'm off to Mercadona now before you to get some 🤭

Generally, I'll pick any cheese which has "Viejo" or "Añejo Reserva" on the packet.

Regards.

I'm not keen on cheese at all so you can all have my share.

I'm kind like that 😀

Thank you, Kim, it's on the shopping list.

Incidentally, if you don't already know, the franchise butcher in Lidl at Almoradí sell parmesan, which I like to eat on its own as well as grated.

From experience, to buy real good Spanish cheese, unfortunately it seems to be only available from small peripatetic producers at local markets. We have friends who always have an amazing selection, easily comparable with good French, and they always buy from these sellers. We have also found travelling producers from small farms in a couple of our own local markets. Also, seriously expensive food stores, such as, in our area, Pepe la Sal and Sol y Mar, have absolutely wonderful cheese. We very occasionally buy it as aspecial treat - we starve for the rest if the week!

I totally agree, Stephanie. The best Spanish cheese I've ever bought was at the medieval market in Xativa. I could have stayed there all day sampling the different varieties. I just wish I'd asked for their details from the stall-holders/producers.

UPDATE:  Mercadona in Benijofar must have had a delivery today, because the shelf was full - and it's delicious!  Not as crumbly as a mature cheddar, so easy to slice, and with the most wonderful nutty flavour.  Hubby loves it too, he said it's the best Spanish cheese he's tasted - so now I have to go straight back to get some more 😄

Kind regards,

Kim
