I don’t think this can be right

Can anyone please advise

You buy the house you buy the debt. That's usually why repossessions are cheap because they have surprises

Your solicitor should really have told you this, unless you made the mistake of using a solicitor recommended by the agen

Not true in all cases, the bank we bought our repo from paid off the debts, however we needed a new habitation certificate before utilities would reconnect which required architectural plans drawing up and it cost nearly 500 euros, so yes hidden costs.

It is not a great deal cheaper to live in Spain than in UK these days, apart from the cost of wine and cigarettes which are much less. However, the basic cost of living I think is similar - one can always find a few thing s which are cheaper, but overall it is much more expensive than you think; The cost of utilities isn’t cheap - the cost of water can be a shock! Wouldn’t advise coming hoping to find work as it will be very unlikely ubnless firstly you speak Spanish and secondly , can offer a skill/service which may not be available here, which is not likely these days. The alternative is to set up as ‘autonomo, self employed,  which will immediately bring you into the Spanish social security and tax system. Working illegally for cash is not advisable as they will come down like a ton of bricks if you are caught. You really need to have a financial cushion, or independent means. You will also have to buy private health insurance if you intend to become resident as the EHIC is only for tourists as an emergency.
