Hi Maz,

If you're UK State retirement age and qualify for an S1, which you can obtain from the Overseas Healthcare Team at NHS Business Services Agency, you will receive State healthcare in Spain, reimbursed by the UK.

If younger and not working, you will have to buy private health insurance for your residency application.  After the first year, you can opt to join the Convenio Especial at a cost of €60 per person, per month, rising to €157 pp/pm from age 65, until you qualify for your S1.  The advantage of the C.E. is that it doesn't exclude pre-existing conditions, but like PHI, it doesn't cover the cost of prescriptions.

If you plan to work in Spain, you would receive State healthcare either by contributing to the Spanish social security system as "autonomo" (self-employed), or via a contract of employment.

As the UK is no longer in the EU, you need to apply for an appropriate visa from your nearest Spanish embassy (London and Edinburgh) or consulate (Manchester) in the UK.  There should be a post about this by another member in the Tips and Guides section, which you can find in the ribbon at the top of the page.

Kind regards,

Kim

I am looking to move to Spain at the end of this year. I have all the information for the S1 from the Government site but of course, some of the detail is lacking in specific circumstances. I am diabetic, and on heart tablets, etc. I am 79 this year so am covered for most things, but how much would I pay for insulin if at all?

It says somewhere that I have to get a letter from my GP about my state of health. At my age it is not 100% but what are they looking for? What detail in the GP letter would make the Authorities turn me down?

Getting all the forms filled in correctly and on time would be relatively easy from my side, but what about the delays from the Spanish Authorities? How can I work out a timeline which will cover all the hindrances found along the way? Should I employ someone to control and tick all the boxes along the timeline?

Advice please.
