Morning, all. I've nearly been resident for a year now and have health insurance with ASSSA. I understand that after a year, I am eligible for healthcare via the Convenio Especial. I am 65 in August, so my payment would be the high rate (about €165? a month). And I don't get my UK state pension for another year, at 66, so I don't qualify for an S1 till then? Looks like staying private is the way to go? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi,
You won't be able to apply for the S1 healthcare scheme until you are receiving UK government pension. You can also include a spouse on the S1 if required but he/she will need to be named on the S1 forms. If you have only a year to wait it might be easier to carry on with your private healthcare. You can arrange your S1 by ringing the Overseas healthcare team at Newcastle.

We are 52 and 56 we've gone through the process to join the convenio especial. There's a degree of comfort to be had from getting on it given it covers everything. If you want peace of mind then consider it. We still have private medical as well and will likely keep it until December just in case our new GP suggests treatment which might come with a waiting list on the national health system.

It really depends on the state of your health and your view of risk. As you say, at your age (65), the monthly payment for the Convenio Especial increases from €60 per month to €157 per month. On the upside, the C.E. doesn't exclude any pre-existing conditions, but neither the C.E., nor PHI, cover the cost of prescriptions.
Only you can decide whether it makes sense for you to maintain your PHI for the sake of one more year, until you can claim your S1, because unless your PHI premium is higher than €1,884 per year (€157 × 12), your PHI is going to be cheaper than the C.E.
Also, when you start drawing your State Retirement Pension at age 66 next year, if you have a younger spouse, they can piggy-back on your S1 and you can both cancel your PHI.
