I receive an injection every 3 months here in the UK. I imagine I couldn't just walk into a hospital/doctors surgery & ask them to do it. Would it be absolutely necessary to have arranged health insurance? How easy/quickly could that be done? Would I do it after arriving in Spain or before travelling? Is it expensive? Apologies for all the q's but it goes without saying this is a very serious matter & I wouldn't want to be turned away & have my health compromised. (I'm an Irish ppt holder - would an EHIC help here or must it be private insurance?).

If you are moving here permanently then you will need private healthcare unless you are of pensionable age and then you can get your healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme.

I don't think that any doctor especially at any hospital will just give you injections on request as they will need to know your full health history.

As an Irish passport holder you will need to sign on the foreigners register within 90 days of arrival at the local National police station. You will need to prove that you have healthcare sorted and a regular income.

Steve.

I would take out private healthcare as one of the requirements for moving, however:

1. I don’t speak Spanish, so would any GP/hospital appointments require me to take an interpreter along?

2. My UK GP records - would I have to have all of that moved over to the Spanish doctor & would I have to get it all translated? I imagine that could be a monumental & time consuming task not to mention the cost!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Regarding the injections, I have been having monthly injections with the nurse at my local public health clinic, always with a pre-booked appointment, which is very easy. I do however speak Spanish! But as others have said, you would have to either be a pensioner with an S1 or be working and paying seguridad social in order to register with the public health system here. With private healthcare, you are far more likely to find an English-speaking doctor/nurse. Good luck
