My wife and I are considering retiring in Spain next year when we reach retirement age (66) in the UK and we are both UK citizens. I am as fit as a fiddle but my wife has Rheumatoid Arthritis and is on a Biological medication (Tocsilizumab/Roactemra) supplied by the NHS. It is pretty costly at about €22k a year. If we cannot get this covered in Spain then we will have to stay in the UK. Has anybody had the same or a similar situation that can give us some advice?

In theory, you are entitled to health services here, paid for by UK Gov (in most cases I would imagine it saves them money). However, I would be inclined to check with your intended health centre in Spain to confirm that the specific medication is available and that they would be prepared to ptescribe it.

As UK retirees you would be entitled to claim your healthcare through the S1 healthcare scheme which is fully paid for by the UK government, so if you were to become fully legal residents in Spain the all healthcare costs would be covered by the UK government.

I assume that you fully understand the healthcare and financial requirements to gain the non lucrative visa?

Hello

When I  moved here, I was not surprised to find that  none of my UK meds  (3) were available here under the same name. I had medical insurance then &  a private Dr wrote down the Spanish equivolent. Also my low dose aspirin as a blood thinner was changed to the Spanish warfarin =Sintrom.

With a few adjustments it all worked out ok.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

I am familiar with the financial requirements, but I am not sure about the medical process that needs to be followed. The medicine is available in Spain according to my research under a different brand name. The challenge is that we only get six weeks' supply at a time and it needs to be kept refrigerated. So my timing margin of error is very small in making a transition from the UK to Spain. I am trying to establish the exact protocol to follow and the timing risks involved.

You may find this link helpful if you are retired and in receipt of UK State Retirement Pension.

If you are in receipt of form S1, the amount you pay for prescriptions will be based on your annual (Spanish) tax returns.the following link should provide you with more information:
