Gran Alacant to Bilbao via Madrid

Would like some advice on travelling to Bilbao from Gran Alicant via Madrid excluding toll roads if possible, thanking you in advance. Derek.

I did that trip a lot of times. The only stretch where you pay is arriving to the north and I recommend you to pay. There is a free alternative but it is a bad read since it is very busy with trucks and with a lot of curves.

There is almost no alternative but taking the only existing motorway to Madrid, follow there the M50 signs which lead you to the A1 and straight to Vitoria. Follow signpost N240 Bilbao. Navigators will probably lead you a different way, but you should have one for driving in Bilbao which will be an experience rarely to repeat.
