Hi All

I am hoping, when flights are permitted by the Scottish and Spanish authorities, to purchase a modest holiday flat near Alicante City.

Have been doing a lot of homework and Gran Alacant now seems to be coming out on top!

If you have any advice, please post it. I would also like to meet people, Brits and Spaniards especially, out there.

Written from a snowy spot in Greater Glasgow.

I don't know how far away you live from the nearest airport, Gran Alacant is wihtin a stone's throw from Alicante's quite busy airport. I wouldn't want to live there.

Thanks. I was seeing closeness to the airport as a plus, but you're right that it could also be a minus.

Hello

We have an apartment in Gran Alacant in an urbanisation called Novamar.
I would recommend looking in this area because of the location.  It is within walking distance to the beautiful Carabassi beach ( 15-20 minutes stroll) also the bus stops are located down at the beach which will take you to Santa Pola or Alicante . Although your budget is tight, I think you could get a 2 bed apartment in this area. Look at urbanisations called Monte Mar (bajo) or Mediterraneo. These urbs offer a small strip of pubs/ restaurants within walking distance. There is a local bus that does a circular route around Gran Alacant when you want to go to the supermarket or to check out other areas.

We have rented in various areas of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola over the years and found this area of GA suits our requirements best.

If possible ( not withstanding a worldwide pandemic 😷) I would recommend renting for a time to get a feel for GA.

good luck in your search

Anne ( also for snowy glasgow ☃️)

Thank you very much for this extremely useful intel.

We are thinking of renting an apartment for a few weeks in Lower Alacant, where I think you are located, to spy out the land.

Owe you a drink--Irn Bru or Tennents?

Hi there I bought my apartment in upper Monte y Mar Gran Alacant just over a year ago! It was a fantastic decision it’s in a great area with enough going on for me....close to bars restaurants supermarket banks etc! It’s a 20 minute walk down to the beautiful Carabassi beach. And u benefit from the gorgeous views in the upper area’s. We’re not in the flight path -yet only 10 minutes/€20 in a taxi to/from Alicante airport! I can personally recommend Gran Alacant Properties ( estate agents) they are based in the Carabassi centre-Chris & Laura were outstanding & I cannot praise them enough ...very professional 5star personal service provided!

I’m happy to answer any questions..... good luck 🤞

Thanks very much. I am making a note of all of this useful information. That estate agent is already on our radar, but it is useful to have a personal recommendation.

Gran Alacant sounds great, but I've got a couple more questions, if anyone can advise:

Am I right in thinking that for one-bedroom flats Gran Alacant is not the best place? Albufereta and Playa San Juan on the other side of the city seem to have more of 'em.

(I say this because our budget is modest at 100k euros: and that's before we blow half of it on carryouts before we can even get to Spain!!)

Gran Alacant seems to be made up of lots of 'gated' communities. Does that make it a little exclusive, or can you wander around where you want?

(I'm not insinuating that anyone is stuck up, but on paper the architecture and landscaping looks like it might keep people apart.)

Whichever community u buy ur apartment u’ll have keys for that area & pool.... however ur free to roam around most places or maybe u’ll make friends with people on certain gated communities so u can have a good nose around! U’ll definitely get a 2bedroom property for ur €100k budget....don’t forget u need to add approximately 12%-15% for all ur fees taxes etc! P.s. glad to say very friendly & far from stuck up! 😁

Thanks again. That's good to hear. We do like wandering around in circles doing nothing.

Encouraging also what you say about our budget. It's actually £100k, so we have already included the transactions costs you rightly mention. Hopefully we won't buy a lemon.

As several have told us, both on this forum and some friends in Alicante City, it is best to come and rent for a bit first. That we intend to do as soon as the powers that be allow it. 😎

I'll probably be back on this forum with some more questions...seems there's a lot of good will out there.

As a couple of Fifers who made the move to Spain two years ago we both wish you the best of luck and hope your as lucky as we have been. Absolutely no regrets, love the area we are in, made lots of new friends and thankfully with the rescue dog we acquired when we got here plenty of exercise.
