We have some family coming to visit for 10 days in July . They have a cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier . We understand the muzzle rule etc but are now worried that they will need a special licence . The dog will stay in our house for most of the time as unfortunately she’s very poorly with cancer ( hence their reluctance to leave her behind )

Please , can anyone explain the licence rules to me ?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for this Cheryl .I am assuming that this ruling is for tourists coming into Spain for a holiday aswell . However comment #10 seems to state otherwise . I’m so confused and wonder who to call . Sadly I think they may cancel their trip or just stay in France now and holiday there instead rather than risk being turned away 😢

I have 2 very large dogs I bring on holiday with me. One being a mastiff

I never muzzle them

I don't register them nor do I apply for a license

The only thing I would say is as part of return journey to the UK a vet has to undertake a health check as part of the stamping their passport process.

If the dog is visibly  poorly they may not certify it fit to return

The dog will not be turned away. France / Spain is a soft border so no one is interested what is in the car. If your worried don't take the dog into centres and take on short walks around your Urb. You are over thinking this.

Wdev, the laws seem to state that a licence is needed. If the dog is on the dangerous dogs list it doesn't become less dangerous when it's on holiday!!
#10 starts off by saying "I'm not an expert on this....."
I guess it comes down to choosing to follow the laws of the country, or not.

Well that’s exactly what I was doing ....trying to clarify the what the law was in Spain as it’s slightly unambiguous judging by a quick google search .Nethertheless . I am grateful for your input  .

Not to forget. even if you have all licenses, permits or whatever, in Spain animals (including dogs) are not allowed in most public areas, not in public transport, beaches (except designated areas) parks, and must always be muzzled and leashed.

Thank you . I already know all the laws re leashes and muzzles . I just wanted to know if they need a licence  . It’s fine now , they’re not going to come they’re cancelling their channel Crossing right now
