Or shuttle bus to Benidorm and then the tram. Just a bus from Torrevieja to Alicante, though.

If you like to explore, stay a night or two in Alicante city first,then get the bus to Torrevieja. But central Torrevieja may prove a disappointment after Alicante. Buses here https://regular.autobusing.com/info?empresa=costa-azul&locale=es
I believe there is a tram from Alicante to Calpe and I wanna try it sometime! https://www.tramalacant.es/en/

Playa Moncayo is isolated , there’s one restaurant nearby, the others are a 30 minute walk. The centre of Guardamar and the bus station a 45 minute walk.
Presumably it’s the Hotel Playas de Guardamar you are looking at? Try looking at somewhere in the Eden Mar, Hotel Guardamar area as they are central to town.
Alternatively there’s the sister blue hotel in on the edge of La Mata/Torrevieja, which has a bus stop right outside Hotel Playas de Torrevieja.

I have had a very different experience of car hire when my car broke down. I hired a Ford car which cost me €15 a day from Allan at Benimar Car Hire. He brings the car to you and collects it back. I did not pay insurance as the car was insured in his name. Excellent service Bobbyboo
