Hello lovely people, we will be permanently moving to Guardamar Del Segura soon. A few questions I hope you can help with please:

1) best place to buy a used car from

2) are convertibles more expensive than UK

3) are there any particular models that are cheaper to buy there than UK (my partner currently has an Audi TT that he loves)

4) things to be mindful of and costs involved

5) how do we re-register vehicle in our name

6) any recommendations for car insurance companies that have English speaking staff

7) my partner will be 66 - what will he have to do in terms of getting a Spanish driving license. Will he have to take a new driving test and if so how does he arrange that (where, costs). Is the test  person English speaking.

So many things to think about!

Thank you

GrahamLynn

OK  couple of points to consider.

Vehicles are considerably more expensive to buy in Spain

Buying second hand cars in Spain there is a myriad of paperwork to complete. The Spanish love their red tape. However the dealer will do that for you. If you’re unsure most people will pay a gestor to do it for them. You also need an NIE number and need to be registered on the padron to buy a vehicle. Also need proof of your address ie rental contract or house deeds. That’s so the vehicle is registered to the correct town hall for the SUMA (road tax) payment.

There is an insurance office in Quesada, Rightmove. Staff there are lovely and British not only are they insurance brokers but will also help you with any legal stuff you need to do, as in transferring vehicle ownership, driving licence, TIE etc

I’m sure you already found out that moving to Spain since Brexit is not easy, with visas etc. You now need to sit a Spanish Driving Test, as it is no longer possible to exchange your U.K. licence to a Spanish one. But at least going through the Spanish test, you will presumably be taught the Spanish way of driving round roundabouts, how not to use indicators and how to double park, especially on zebra crossings and street corners. Not forgetting the favourite rule that if you’re stopped at a red light and you spot your mate in a bar, it’s OK to hold up all the traffic whilst you nip in the bar and have a quick brandy whilst you put the world to right.

Speed limits have just changed in Spain  and are ridiculously low and it’s become so much of a challenge driving a car so slowly that most people have given up. For instance there’s a part of Benidorm where the speed limit is 10km You can walk quicker than that.  The speed limit in most of Guardamar is 30km So it’s pointless by a high performance car unless you plan on using the motorways on a regular basis. Not sure where in Guardamar you’re moving to, but there is at least one second hand car dealer on the industrial estate. Car dealers for some reason seem to change premises a good deal

Hope all goes well with your move, Guardamar is a lovely place to live.

Surprisingly ... there aren't that many convertibles here, and the few that are here are driven by northern Europeans.

The Spanish (who know better) don't want to fry.

New car prices are on a par with the UK. But (as above) used cars are considerably more expensive - they don't rust much. If you want a new car, leasing is becoming a thing here - Sabadell have some reasonable offers.

Guardamar cars on the port road are the best!

Recently moved here, Guardamar cars was recommended to us. The owner Nico, speaks English, after care is fantastic! He has even booked car in for ITV for us, to make it easier.

He can source any car you want.

Would not go anywhere else.

Avoid the one on Satna Ana ind east facing the A332 ..!!

Also be aware that a lot of used cars here for sale are NOT Spanish but have been imported cheaply from Germany with a large mark up , so have the same corrosion problems as brit vehicles ..!!

Convertibles seems to be an American and UK thing ., also avoid leather and go for fabric or a mix , leather is cold in winter, slippery in summer , fades ,dries out and crumbles ..
