I am a 72 single lady now finally free to do what I wanted to do at the start of my retirement ie live in Spain. However because of Brexit I fear it is too late. If I sell up and buy,  but can only stay 90 days,  I will have nowhere to live in England for the other 90 days in the 180 which are the rules of the Schengen Agreement. Is the door now completely closed for future emigration to Spain or is there still a way? I want to buy, live in Spain and become a citizen. Any advice out there?

You only need to be in Spain for 90 days to register as a resident, so there is plenty of time. House ownership is not a pre-requisite, so you could rent initially while you apply for residency and find your ideal home.

Depending on your tax situation you may need to be aware of the 183 day rule which is that after being in Spain for more than 183 days in the calendar year you become classified as tax resident and taxes would be due in Spain (there is a double taxation treaty between UK / Spain but there are gaps, CGT (Capital Gains Tax) being a significant one. It's for this reason I'm only moving to Spain on 6th July this year although my house sale will complete well before that... I've a 3 month European Road Trip I'm planning in advance of arriving in Spain.

Thank you for your reply. I initially wanted to rent first but thought if I bought before December 31st I might just scrape in. However I have been reading Jim’s advice column and it would appear that I would need an income over £2,400 per month in order to live in Spain  and get a TIE and my income is less than that. It seems as if  Brexit has stuffed me.

Hi, Not sure why you think 'the door might be completely closed' or even ajar its still as open as its ever been at least for the next 11 months. You can move buy and live, you don't need to be a citizen of Spain but you will need residency.

hi Lynne

Im in the same situation as you.

I want to come out and live permanently in Spain.

Ive had my house on the market since last April, and have been out to visit various  regions and types of house ,

I too thought my boat had sailed, but the housing market in Spain is flat at the moment, not just because of the Brexit thing but with buyers across Europe etc, also.

Im still  "Half Glass full " at the moment, cant see Spain, doing even more to make  their housing market even more  stagnant

Hopefully, I will sell soon, and when I do will go out, rent , and find a house.

Im in contact with an Estate agent that know my budget, and criteria, so Im hoping I find Something quickly.

Keep the faith, lifes too short to not fulfill your dream

Good luck, keep us all informed how your getting on.

Jimmy

Thank you. That was clear. So as long as I move before December I will be ok. Alright then I’ll start looking. Thank you.

"The only thing is that the authorities want to see a continuous income to support yourself and it is best shown by several monthly payments of pension/salary into a Spanish bank account. This means that practically, you need to have been here long enough to fulfil that requirement"

That may not be true.

We presented evidence of income but only one month of it was into our Spanish bank A/C the rest was UK bank statements and DWP notifications of our pensions.

That was I Orihuela nearly two years ago but since all Brit residency applications are being handled in Alicante we really need to know how they are looking at income there.
