Imagine my surprise when getting to the checkout at the La Marina Mercadona the trolley was whipped away from me and turned 180 degrees so the handle was the other end from me.

When asked why a shrug of shoulders from the man and “es mi trabaja” it’s my job - no explanation given - the only thing I can think of is auto self distancing but it bought me near the couple still packing their purchases.

Does anyone really know why or all of a sudden we should either be pushing trollies the wrong way around throughout the store or are they waiting for someone to remove the handles so the problem doesn’t arise in the future?

Please help

Thanks

Hello,

It is related to social distancing, I was asked to do it in the new Mercadona behind the Habaneras Centre a few weeks ago..... she said  it creates a bit more space for people/trollies behind you . I didnt dispute it, it isn't a big ask  if keeps everyone happy ha!

Cheers

Hi

Thanks

"only thing I can think of is auto self distancing but it bought me near the couple still packing their purchases." as in my post

So their theory dismissed on this occasion though maybe corona doesn't attack rear facing trollies users or similar. Just like the virus only comes out after the beginning of curfew and goes away at 6am etc!!

It's a nonsense which serves no useful purpose.

If there were any scientific proof that it did I think you'd find everyone doing it!

I quiet agree

Another customer had the trolley spun - she was standing in the same place the trolley had the handles away from her.

So what is the reason they are doing this?

From the point of view of emptying a trolley onto a conveyor it can make some sense to do it from it's front but that's the only possible advantage and has little to do with distancing.

I'm guessing it's an instruction from upon high though as it seems to be practiced in every Mercadonna.

For devilment sometimes I deliberately ignore it, even entering my 70's there's still a spark of the rebel in me 😜

Our Mercadona in Los Balcones (Torrevieja) started doing this back in April. I don’t think they know why either! I don’t see any social distancing benefit as you still have the same physical mass between you and the people in front of you.
They obviously have their instructions, and it’s no big deal ... anything to keep the queue moving and help their day go more smoothly is okay with me!

Yes, the stores were given this directive months ago. You are meant to stand at the side of the trolley and reach over it with your items, most uncomfortable. Certain employees always sick to the rules, but most don’t. I never understood the reasoning behind it. A local newspaper printed an article about it when Mercadona gave the directive out to their staff.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

And if they are still loading? Or no one there ? And the people behind creep up ! No trolley between  best to have two trolleys one in front and one behind with mercadonas logic
