Sheila64     I am not entirely sure what you are looking at .  I never mentioned an Expat Account.  I am in the process of opening, like others are, a normal bog standard current account with HSBC UK.   Note the last 2 ......UK after HSBC.  The details on t...

...here are clearly given in order that you can start the process of opening an account with them.  Initially we all have used our UK passports as ID and copy of back and  front of TIE for proof of address.  They require you also to provide a "selfie" type photograph as part of your application process.  I started my application at the beginning of July. It was all acknowledged on my Spanish mobile and I was given a reference number.  I telephoned them last week to enquire as to how my application was proceeding.  I was told that my application is at present with a team, awaiting processing.  They are inundated with new applicants it would appear. Not surprising really.

Hi Stephanie, I am seriously looking at this account, as there seems no other option for me.I presume that you applied online?  Did you supply any other documents they asked for, apart from copy passport and TIE? Did these need to be certified by a professional? I found out today that Amazon U.K. do not accept a Spanish bank as method of payment. We buy Kindle books every week and Amazon.es is not suitable for this. There are so many problems to solve, so any help you can give me would be so lovely. Thanks

My application was done on line,

on my laptop.  So far they have not requested anything other than what I have previously mentioned above.. Neither passport or front and back of TIE have so far needed to be certified.  TIE is both in Spanish and English so I cannt see they would need that doing in any case. It is mentioned that they MAY require additional  proof of the address you have used, showing it within a period of 4 months prior to the application and also proof that you have been at the address you have given, for a period of three years.  They give examples of what they consider acceptable.  I took detailed notes of everything as I went along. I have already downloaded  and saved the letters I received from DWP in respect of my OAP increases, should they ask for them. What I also did do was copy down on an A4 sheet, the EXACT answers I gave in the initial on line application. So I know what I told them in respect of the answers to their questions. They do ask for monetary details of your annual income which will be paid in to the account.  They did also confirm that they are able to use Switch, Barclays to themselves.. Give it a go.  I didnt find it difficult. Go for it and good luck. You will need to give them your Spanish mobile number as their responses, so far , have been via mine.

Read today that Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax are going to close all bank accounts for residents in Spain. Can only keep the account open in the UK, if the account holder is a permanent resident of Britain. Anyone been affected as yet ? And if so how are you getting around it.

I´ve added my sister to my UK bank account - so is now a joint / shared account - hopefully that will allow me to keep the account open. They can´t close it if its half owned by a UK resident.

I am with Lloyds and they have known from the start that I live in Spain. They email me of any changes in their T&C’s. I received an update this week, and there is no mention of closing accounts that do not have a U.K. address. Barclays, however, announced soon after Brexit that they were g...

...oing to close accounts. UPDATE Lloyds DO say that they MAY have to close some accounts, or change the level of service provided, and their T&C’s reflect this. I will ring them to find out how this could affect me.

IF Lloyds follow suit, does anybody know if NS&I will accept a Wise account? ( Any withdrawals or premium bond prizes have to be paid into a U.K. account.)

I worry that Spanish bank accounts might not carry the same financial protection as given by the FSA in the U.K. not good to keep all your eggs in one basket, me thinks!

You don´t need to worry - Spanish bank accounts are guaranteed by the government for 100,000 euros per account.  This should cover all the major Spanish banks and has been in force for a number of years.

Thanks, that is very reassuring.👍

We have retained both our HSBC accounts and Nationwide, both of whom are aware of our current address here. I contacted both organisations when this problem first appeared some while ago. Both confirmed they were not closing ‘Spanish’ residents UK accounts and had no plans so to do, with the caveat from Nationwide that they no longer support residents in Holland. No idea why!!!

Went into Halifax bank in May, opened a current account, used TIE, Spanish driver’s license and UK passport as ID, they made a couple of phone calls, one hour latter account opened. Card and PIN number were at the house when I returned, telephone banking ID arrived 3 days later. Also have an account with Nationwide, asked them about any possible changes as they are aware I live in Spain, again they made some phone calls on my behalf, informed me that as far as they are concerned, as long as I inform them of any change of address, then no issues with me keeping the account.
