You can always cancel the private medical cover once you have secured cover under the S1. Insurance companies will refund for unspent months after deducting a small administrative fee.

Thanks, not sure whether the administrate fee will be almost the same as remaining months prems but worth a try.

The reason why you have to pay a years up front on your insurance is so no-one does as you are suggesting. They sussed that one out long ago!!

Yes, but nothing to stop you cancelling after who have successfully completed the Resident process

So you can only apply for the S1 if you on UK state pension.

Does this mean you will still need to have private insurance for your NLV in the second year?

No, you can apply for healthcare via the S1 scheme when you have legal residency and a Spanish address. You can use the S1 healthcare cover for your NLV renewal.
