exteria of balcony

I have just painted the small area of my balcony white, from a dirty brown. Now I’ve been informed that white isn’t acceptable and it needs to go, as it’s not aesthetically pleasing to the building? It’s a block of 4 properties but the rest look dismal, I thought they would be happy I’m looking after it and making it better than it was, I don’t know where I stand though i don’t to fall out with neighbours after being there a short time.
