Driving from Santander to Moraira

I've done the drive a couple of years ago, as far as Pego where I live.

As far as route's concerned, you need to drive along the coast to Bilbao, then cut inland past Logroño to Zaragoza, then down to Valencia past Teruel, and back home down the AP7. I advise taking the N road at Tudela to Zaragoza instead of the motorway to save paying tolls. There are no tolls after Zaragoza. Bear in mind these roads cross some desolate, high country. Keep an eye on weather reports in winter.

In terms of hotel stops, it depends on time of day you are landing. I think I arrived at Santander early evening, in very bad weather, so was glad I'd booked an overnighter at Hotelandgo, Miranda de Ebro, a couple of hours drive from the port. If you can go a bit further, I can also recommend Bed4U hotel at Tudela, which I've used for other trips.

If only car hire hadn't shot up in price !!

Zaragoza-Teruel is not the best option during the winter unless you are prepared to get caught in the snow for a night or two. Instead consider Bilbao-Burgos-Madrid-Albacete-Alicante with no tolls beyond Vitoria. Sorrounding Madrid avoid "R" marked (toll) motorways.

Car Hire is far from through the roof at the moment. A 16 day trip which was £360 when booked in October has now just been rebooked for £105 with a free 2nd driver. If anything they have gone through the floor!

Not our experience. We are looking for a rental for 3 months. Last year's prices were 450-550 per month, this year's quotes are 700+. These are companies that specialise in long term.

I'd be interested to know who you use.

Long term is often different and more expensive and I haven't looked into them but I would switch the car monthly. Currently they can be had for around £100 a month.
