We've lived on Mallorca for 35 years but we're moving to the Peninsula shortly -- not quite sure where -- hence me posting in THIS forum.

I hope it will help reassure folks about the squatter problems all over Spain.

Our neighbour is German. She was taken into hospital last week and her house is empty.

Yesterday morning I heard suspicious noises from inside the house.

I called a friend of the neighbour who has keys but she didn't pick up.

I called the local Municipal Police and explained the situation. Within 10 minutes, 3 cop cars turned up.

Six cops exited. One went to the front door and started battering. "¡Abre la Puerta! ¡Policia!" he yelled. Other neighbours came out.

What I DID notice in particular was the other cops -- all big guys -- were donning heavy-duty leather gloves as if preparing to use their knuckles.

They looked very much like they meant business.

The door opened slightly as if someone was peeking out.

The cops rushed the door and we could hear a lot of crashing, banging, Effing and blinding in Spanish.

(I speak Spanish. I won't repeat the words here but it was... colourful.)

They dragged 2 greasy-looking gits and one druggie-looking woman out. (All Spanish.) One guy was bleeding from the nose. The other looked scared. The woman was screaming to make sure she got all the attention. (She didn't.)

They played them gently, carefully, lovingly (yeah, right...) in the back of a van. They sealed the door of the house with
Police tape, thanked me and left.

Later, a joiner turned up with another cop car and fixed the door. (It's still sealed. The neighbour is still in hospital.)

My point is they made NO difference we and the neighbour and not Spanish. They were clearly NOT on the side of the would-be squatters.

Just sayin'.

Norm.

Good to hear. Too many stories of them not doing anything. However, we had one case near me and squatters got in by breaking a window (no idea how they got in with the grilles over the windows) and the neighbour phoned the local police. Said they couldn't do anything but a Guardia Civil car turned up about an hour later and forced the door in and dragged a couple of guys and a woman looking suspiciously like the ones you mentioned.

Again, sealed the door and someone came along a little to repair it. Be nice if they all reacted like that.

Imagine if that happened in the UK, the police would be arrested for assault and the squatters given the keys along with a grovelling apology for any inconvenience caused !

The "Ways & means Act" has always existed. (UK).

The Guardia Civil sometimes use common sense here "formas y medios actúan" (when political correctness may be avoided)

We're in Palma Nova Steve. I was a pro musician when we came out 35 years ago.

I worked with Leapy (backing band) every week for years. Could do his act word for word without thinking about out it!
