We paid £5k in 2007 for 4ton of belongings so 14 yrs later price hasn't risen much. However I know price after Brexit compared to prior has risen a lot due to the extra paperwork. Some companies are adding up to an extra £500. Brittany ferries are expensive but don't think with tolls, fuel and ...

...overnight stops in France and possibly 1 in North Spain there's a huge differrence but so much easier. I have a membership code for anyone interested, 10% off the fare and it all helps.

My hubby bought a van so no hiring charge for one cos he knew it would take several loads at least. In fact we, ve done 2 loads and barely halfway through. The reason we are moving items is because we were ransacked in 2008, everything stolen, fight lasting 2yrs with insurance Co. and refusal to pay out. We lost approx £15k of belongings and we replaced everything in Uk cos we had no faith it wouldn't happen again. Problem is it took a lot of time and my UK home is too full of stuff to allow us to refurb and sell. I refused to send stuff over until we had replaced it all and became anxious about the transport so hubby bought a van to allow me to feel more comfortable. Now this Brexit lark causing more problems, and if we need to pay iva and import duties that will be the straw breaking camels back. We won't pay it, we,ll have to sell it all and do without. I noted your statement"I, ve too many nice things to leave behind" that's exactly how I felt 14yrs ago and again now but I,m not paying over the top in charges. I am awaiting a reply re an email I sent to London Consulate. I think if you can show proof of ownership of a Spanish home whether full time resident or part time then it should be exempt, just another way 2nd homeowners are made to feel inferior.

With all the costs for us, ie van tax(£280) mot, insurance with international breakdown, fuel and ferry cost I, m sure we are not saving much from getting a company to do it, but mentally I have become territorial over my belongings( blame the trauma of losing everything) btw I do mean "everything". Now we are closer to travelling to Spain I, m hopeful we will receive more info from people's experiences, particularly non residents.

Pauline

Hello Pauline,

Honestly my heart goes out to you! I hope this time it will be a much better experience. Please do let me know how you get on. I'd be interested to find out in particular how you get on regarding the 21% tax. Consulate in Manchester confirmed the phones are not being answered at the moment and all enquiries should be made via email. The only difficulty is with that is they take ages to reply. They told me to contact the tax office in Spain but never gave me an email address. I asked them for it and they still haven't replied. They did send me a poster but it is in Spanish. They are not helpful at all. I wouldn't mind but I am very responsible and want to ensure I am doing everything legally. Some days I really struggle so I feel your pain.

Keep your chin up. I'm sure it'll all come good in the end and you'll be very happy :)

Yeah prices are rising on the back of Brexit without a doubt, just a heads up if anyone is thinking of driving through France to Spain you need a Transit document to allow non EU travel( UK origin) to transit through France and enter Spain the costs for this document is around £240.00 bloody scandalous if you think about it but too many revenue streams are opening up now in the back of the EU divorce

Good luck.  Ian

That's unbelievable, every traveller having to pay that, can you supply link to that statement? What about each way, surely not. Not heard that before. Makes ferry price seem better.

Just had a family friend move to Málaga area at the weekend and the following is now being enforced

If you're had residencia in the past 12 months any Import duty can be waived on application of correct documents, if you've had residencia more than 12 months IVA will be enforced at 21% of current values,

as it stands if you've been a resident for a while you've missed the boat on IVA free imports now, our friends (had residencia for 4 years) were told pay up or have the goods impounded.

I had read that on one of the websites but it didn't seem to be in force going on people's experiences. It's a stupid rules as if you were having a new build or total refurb it could take that long to be built and no one would need their belongings in that time. So many hoops to jump through to make everything so awkward.

Couldn't agree more, yesterday I tried out prices for Brit Ferries, OMG how they, ve gone up. Taking a van over past few years the prices were £300/400 per journey so £600/800 depending on dates. Yesterday £850 lowest to £1050 and the cabins gone up about £20 too. So tried Ryanair and Jet 2, at least double what they were and car hire, unbelievable prices. Only did the flying side as our car is in our garage expired itv so need transport initially. We,ve decided to go end of August to Nov by car and leave van till next year. At customs it seems it depends on the person you get and what mood they,re in. I, ll just take my duty free gift allowance in the car and hope for best.

The huge problem is trying to get accurate and up to date information. I have literally tried every avenue with no joy. Manchester consulate SO unhelpful. I’ve been trying to get an email address for the equivalent Spanish tax office with no luck. I wouldn’t mind but you want to do things the ‘right’ way and no one wants to help you.

Yes agree. I can’t find anywhere with clear information.

Has anyone used the goods to declare channel at a port ?
