For your information, I have had a UK bank account since moving to Spain 15 years ago without having a U.K. address.   You just cannot open a new U.K. account unless you have a U.K. address.

Also, your State Pension can be paid direct into your Spanish bank account and at a better exchange rate than the usual rate....

Hi, thankyou very much for taking the time to furnish me with valuable information. I am really grateful as collating lots of helpful guidance. After having this dream for so long & spending the years in particular areas & countries to narrow down where we want to be I just don't want Brexit to ruin our dreams especially after what I have sacrificed over the years. I am guessing you are not allowed to say which bank it is but happy to research further. Thankyou once again. I appreciate your reply/support.

Wait for a few months,  prices are dropping slowly in spain , remember it takes up to 18 months to get holiday let licence,  then you pay tax on earnings,  accountant etc.

Hi just wanted to say your not the only ones who feel their dreams have been snatched from them. My partner and I booked 3 different attempts this year to try to buy in Spain before end of Brexit and sort out residency. We were looking forward to starting a new life and taking slightly early retirement partner due to get his state pension in September 2021, Had appointment with solicitors and estate agents but each attempt to get there was cancelled due to covid. Not sure it will ever happen now. But keep dreaming and hoping it might.

Hi, you have my complete sympathy & understanding. I feel for you, I honestly do. I can imagine how soul destroying that must be for you both being so close to achieving your dream - it isn't nice knowing those who voted for brexit have such control over shattering our dreams. I will remain hopeful that some small miracle may happen for you. I am feeling less optimistic for us now but it would be amazing to hear if at all possible you that you did achieve your dream. I can only wish you the very best of luck in doing just that!

As I understand it, up until Jan 2021 a uk bank is fine but after that the EU want to make it that EU residence will not be allowed to have bank accounts outside the EU. to stop off shore, not taxed and money laundering for the rich criminals (which is why BREXIT happened in the first place) at the moment it falls on the banks to do the right thing and Barclays have already announced they will be closing down these accounts but they have to spot them first.

I think nearly everything you've posted there is completely inaccurate.

"Could you point us to the link that says that the guardia will require you to prove that you are a visitor by showing your entry stamp and return ticket as a matter of routine..

That's not what I said.

Agree completely.

Just yesterday I received two new debitcards from Nationwide replacing cards expiring on Dec 32st.

Strange behaviour if accounts are to banned from Jan 1st.!

For a less sensational and inflammatory overview of the current position try this.

For a non resident a UK licence is fine and I was going to reiterate the need for an IDP to accompany it but on reconsulting the UK government website before replying to your question I note that the advice had been updated since I last looked and now they say that you don't need an IDP for Spain...

... however remembering that it's what happens on the ground in Spain that counts and not what the UK government says should or shouldn't, for the price of £5.50 at a post office personally I'd play safe and get one anyway.

https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit

It's said that in the new year if you are stopped in Spain and produce a UK licence the Guardia are going to want to see evidence that you are a legitimate visitor such as your passport, which you should be carrying and which will bear a wet stamp for your date of entry to the Schengen area, and/or your return air/ferry ticket.

Good morning Charlie,

I think this could be a good idea of getting a IDP, just in case.

The only thing is there are different types (1949 & 1968) which one would be relevant for Spain?

I look forward to hearing from you
