I give my dog an antihistamine tablet every day. The human kind are the same, but watch the strength dependent on the dog size. Perfectly safe and quite cheap if bought in bulk.

I have recently, three months, ago adopted a Yorkie Cross, she is very healthy, has a flea collar on also had spot protection against fleas, however she is continually scratching, sometimes it wakes me at night. I have put sulphur blocks in her drinking water as suggested, I have bathed her in an...

...ti allergy shampoo, I am giving her cod liver oil tablets thinking it might be dry skin. She has just been to vet for Rabies injections so I don't really want her to have more injections for antihistamine treatment just yet. She has had several different foods, sachets, dry food, soft roll like Webbox, currently on cooked chicken. but still she scratches.

We have a shiz Tzu and over the last year we have spent nearly 1000€ on all types of medication. The best one that worked was prednisone prescribed by the vet. When we tried to reduce his quantity he started scratching again. I had read that Lewis Hamilton changed his dog to a vegan diet and it cured him. So after discussing it with the vet he said that he could not recommend the diet but having tried everything available he said give it a try. We have now reduced his prednisone to a very small dose and puT him on a 50gr fish 25gr rice and 25gr royal canin Shiz Tsu biscuits 2 a day and so far he has not started scratching again. I hope this of some help to you.

Wow we would like to thank all replies but despite my having gone out today and just bought a no wheat dry dog food which does contain meat and veg. it’s interesting that my husband said before you open the packet let try some fish and rice and he then took some fish from the freezer and it’s defrosting in the fridge as I write and the dog is at my side scratching like mad. i just can’t stand it for her sake it makes me cry. so tomorrow we start fish and rice for four days according to hubby, I don’t know how long before we see results, but if it works there are going to a lot of happy feral cats around as I distribute unused food, and also dog charities who will also benefit. Again thank you everyone I hope to be able to update on this site our findings.

Hi Flamencalady,

We have a Yorkshire Terrier and she cannot wear the Scalibor collars as they bring her out in an awful rash and make her scratch like mad. Therefore, I was just wondering if maybe it could be the flea collar on your little one that is causing the problem? We use Advantix drops as they also help protect against the sand flies plus a worming tablet every 3 months.  She only wears a normal collar with her name tag on but even this I have to remove in the summer as it makes her scratch from where she gets hot. We feed her mainly Royal Canin wet & dry food with a little Pedigree Vital Protection  mixed in which seems to suit her. We had to stop giving her cooked chicken as it upset her stomach. Hope this info is of some use to you as it is so worrying when you can’t seem to fathom out what is wrong to help make them feel better. Good luck.

Best wishes

Thank you Elly May yes we did have a colllar on her but took that off four days ago. I shall have a look  at Riyal Canin we are going to try the fish and rice thing first starting today see how that goes. We have been feeding her on cooked chicken which is fine although our previous Yorkie who died last month age 14 did get used to get the runs with chicken.

I hope we sort it soon it is a menace andIm so gratefull for all the advice.

Here in UK the vet suggested Piriton (same as human one) half of a 4mg twice a day, it is probably a seasonal allergy. There is an alternative to Piriton but very expensive, it is called Apoquel which is very effective for allergies.

Piriton should be fine, may make her a bit sleepy. My dog is 10kg and vet prescribed 1 tablet morning and one at night so 1/2 tablet should be fine for yours.  It seems to work pretty quick, try for a couple of days and see how it goes. Piriton very cheap from pharmacy, do not tell pharmacist it is for a dog, they may not sell it to you. My daughter is a pharmacist and she gives it to her dogs so pretty safe.
