Communidad Valenciana, like some of the others, has an official register of de facto unions, or common law marriages, and a formal procedure for getting onto it.

Has anyone on this site done it and, if so, be willing to share their experience of the process, by PM if they prefer. I need to know the exact nature of documentation required, the pitfalls, etc. I don't need a link to the official site, I've already got it, but the process is still far from clear. In particular, they ask for a legal document less than six months old  from your home country confirming your marital status. I have a decree absolute which is seven years old but nothing else. How do I get around that? Thanks.

Hi Jack

I'm also interested in this.

I've never been married, so how the hell could I prove my marital status!!!!

Could you please let me know how you get on?

Cheers

Steve

Write to the town hall where you were divorced in the UK and ask for a copy of your divorce document. That will be enough. Then it's just having your padron certificate and your NIE card/certificate. The Juzgado de Paz does the rest. They have a list of all the docs you need. But if you go in, someone will explain exactly what to do. I know that I needed a recent copy of my French birth certificate, so I emailed the town hall where I was born, and received the copy days later.
