I was ripped off for 540 Euros. Picked up a car in the worst condition I've ever had from Goldcar. Took photos and returned to the desk, where I was told not to worry as all the damage is logged. On return I had to leave the car with no inspection at 6.00 in the morning. I later received a notification that the roof had scratches and they claimed 500 Euros from my deposit. They also took another 40 Euros but Goldcar did not respond to my request to explain it.  This car did not even have a Goldcar sticker on it, probably because they were ashamed of the condition. My icar insurance covered the loss but I will never use Goldcar again.

Has anyone had trouble with gold car rentals at Alicante airport. My daughter has had her deposit kept because the firm says there was a lot of scratches on the car. But my daughter has asked for proof but the firm is not replying to her emails. She is back in the UK now.

Hi

I can only speak for ourselves, we have used them many times since 2004, but not recently in the past two years because car rental is Sky high, but we have never had a problem either from Alicante, San Javier, or Corvera, the cars were always given with a note of any marks on the cars, they are checked on return. Just make sure they show you any marks and confirm

Hi Also meant to say we used to but their and other car rentals insurance, but we know use RAC around £45 for the years and it as always been accepted, never had to use it, also we take an international driving licence for £5 from the post office as some companies request it and don’t inform you until you arrive

I’ve never been asked for IDL but I think it might be wise to get one. It appears that the car hire companies are looking at every angle to stitch us up. Is it just the Brits or does other nationalities get conned.

Hi

Bought one just before Brexit for the year, went back to the post office for the following year, and the assistant ,insisted we don’t need one, but after much discussion her colleague checked and issued us with one, don’t be fobbed off, I have read on the forum that people were refused the rental because they didn’t have one, best to ne safe than sorry

When we were in the EU a UK driving licence was acceptable, but of course we are not any more so we are no different to anyone else from a non EU country. Just another undocumented feature of brexit.

To make ourselves bullet proof from the rental companies we have to get IDL, take out insurance at home and take a full car video when you pick it up.  I’ve had a few heated discussions with them when I’ve returned a car.  Soon as I said I had a video they signed the paperwork.

Hi, this happened to us with Goldcar with  both cars our party hired. Even though the car they gave us had 43 scratches recorded already.

I have been in touch with my credit   card company to start a dispute as they will not reply to emails. I was successfully previously with Ryanair via this avenue.

I also recommend taking lots of photos before driving off. I previously tackled another company by saying I had 115 photos and would they like to go through them? They backed off immediately. It's sad you have to resort to these tactics but needs must.

I agree totally. Take a video of the whole car including the underneath at the front and back. It’s a pain but really is worthwhile. Don’t forget the roof.

Mine was with a different company, but the same scam. I reported it to my credit card company, who claimed every penny back. You have rights under the consumer credit act, if you use a credit card to pay for your rental.
