We have recently moved into a new house in Pilar de la Horadada and received our first electricity bill last month. As we had only been resident for 19 days I was rather surprised to receive a bill of €110.81

After examining the bill and discussing it with the builder who had arranged our supply I discover there is a €79.5973 sort of standing charge por potencia contratada which apparently is the amount of electricity Plenitude is contracted to supply whether I use it or not. In our case 9.2kW. I understand I can opt for a lower amount but should we exceed the agreed kW the circuit breakers will trip and then there will be a charge to increase the agreed amount!

I would appreciate some advice as to the most suitable and economical  tarrif for myself and wife. We are non resident and own a 3 bedroom 2 shower room town house. Floor area75. 54m2 we have underfloor heating, a/c, washing machine, dishwasher, oven ,hob, air pump boiler,T.V. and lighting. All electric. At present we will only be resident for 90 days in 180 and when we are in residence will not have all the appliances on together.

Our actual usage charge was €23.2302 for 143 kWh.

9.2Kw is very high for a property that size. Older houses will be on 3.3Kw but most are now on 5.75kw which is ample for the modern home with all its gadgets. Our total energy used last month came to 33.85 but our final bill was only 55 euro so there is a big difference.

We get no tripping or things clicking out on our 5.75. Only ones I know who had that were some renters next door who had both aircon units blasting out at very cold, 3 of the rings on the stove going and the oven on. Then put the kettle on and one of the girls came down and put the hair dryer on and out it popped.

We are with Iberdrola and our average bills over the last year have been less than 50 euro a month with the same size of house that you have.

We also have the choose your own 8 hours which means you can pick any 8 hours per day (not concurrent but split how you want it).

You should find 5.75kw is adequate for your needs. I have all the same appliances apart from under floor heating which may be the reason for you having such a high potencia.

Thank you for your guidance on this topic. Are you with Plenitude? If you are what is the standing order charge for 5.75kw if you don't mind me asking?

The standing charge you quoted is far too high even for a potencia of 9.2 Kwh. With Iberdrola we only paid approx 30euro per month for 9.2 potencia. The price may be little more now but nowhere near the amount shown on your bill. Perhaps if it is a brand new house there may be an initial charge for your meter.
Normally standing charge is the price, Plenitude shows approx 10.5 cents, multiplied by the contracted power, 9.2 in your case, multiplied  by the number of days in the billing period.

Therefore 10.5x9.2x 30 = 28,98. Figures are rounded and 30 days used for convenience.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am being ripped off. I paid an initial connection fee of €302. which I assume included the meter. I have tried to contact Plenitude but only get to a recorded message in Spanish. I leave a message in English but no one gets back to me. The builder phoned them up for me and said someone will phone back who speaks English. No one ever did. I tried e mailing twice and on both occasions my e mail was rejected by the server even though I replied to their mail. I went on their website and filled in the boxes where they say they will contact me but when I put my mobile number in with the uk code an error message comes up to say it must be 9 numbers!! I have my solicitor on the case now. It is very frustrating.

Have you tried sending an email to the address on plenitude site. You will need your contract details. You could draft your message and then translate to Spanish using Google translate.

Your solicitor shouls be able to sort it out. Do you have the bill by the way? Everything should be identified on it.

Hi. I'm with Iberdrola on their choose 8 hours.  The 5.75 tariff is Peak 0.087756 euro Kw per day.  Off peak  0.004524  My total bill nearly always between 40 and 50 euro per month.  I'm in a three bed quad.  This month , 30 days  was 38.75 euro which includes Home Electrical Protection at 6.71 per month which I didn't want but they slipped in unnoticed by me.  I'm on a good contract so loath to change it now.

Thank you everyone for your very helpful contributions. My very helpful solicitor is switching my account from Plenitude to Iberdrola. Saving me about €40 a month for 9.2Kw. We will see how we get on.
