It obviously depends on the make and model - if you don't buy exactly the same, then you'll have to alter the plumbing, which is a right bar steward of a job
My Espa Silen motor was stuffed by the floods last autumn. For some reason, electric motors don't like being submerged in liquid mud!
I could have bought a new one for €250, or had the old one refurbished in Almoradí for ~€80. Instead, with a lot of cursing and swearing, and the loss of some blood, I spent €18 on a pair of new bearings and it now runs better than it did before.
I could have got a new motor from the same place I got the bearings - PoolsPlus in San Miguel:

hi jim, my motor starts to smoke after about 20 seconds so probably needs a rewind so maybe cheaper just to buy a new one. ive seen them between 150-200 euros for same pump but thought id try to see if anyone had one knocking around. guess ill have to put my hand in my pocket. bob

Hi Bob, it certainly sounds like the field coil is stuffed.. Does the motor rotate? If not, take the end cowling off and try turning by hand or wrench - the bearings might be seized.
From looking at component prices for my motor, I agree that it's often not worthwhile bothering - at least a complete replacement should last a long time. I was lucky that I only had to spend €18.
